Millbrook Resort

Malaghans Road, 9300 Arrowtown, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of fancy places around Queenstown, but Millbrook Resort honestly caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way possible. You know when you’re driving down Malaghans Road (which, fair warning, is a bit winding but totally worth it) and suddenly this sprawling property opens up with the Remarkables just sitting there like a postcard backdrop? That’s your first hint this place is different.
What really gets me about Millbrook is how they’ve managed to feel both luxurious and… well, not stuffy. The lobby’s got this warm, lived-in elegance – think leather armchairs you actually want to sink into, not just look at. And honestly, the staff seem to genuinely know the area. When I asked about hiking trails, the concierge didn’t just hand me a brochure – he actually sketched out a route on a napkin and told me which café in Arrowtown makes the best meat pies for afterward (it’s The Fork and Tap, by the way). The rooms are spacious in that way that makes you realize how cramped most hotel rooms actually are. I had a villa with a fireplace that I actually used – there’s something about Central Otago evenings that just calls for it, you know? Plus the bed was one of those where you wake up and immediately check what brand the mattress is.
Here’s the thing though – Millbrook isn’t just about the pretty views and the golf course (which is stunning, even if you don’t play). It’s the little stuff that shows they get it. The heating actually works properly, which matters more than you’d think when you’re this close to the mountains. Parking’s easy and free, which is refreshing after dealing with Queenstown’s parking nightmares. And they don’t blast music in the common areas – you can actually have a conversation over breakfast. The restaurant’s quite good too, though I’d still recommend venturing into Arrowtown for dinner at least once. It’s only about ten minutes away, and honestly, wandering those historic streets after a good meal is half the Central Otago experience. The spa’s solid if you’re into that sort of thing, but personally, I think the best relaxation here is just sitting on your deck with a pinot noir from one of the nearby vineyards, watching the light change on those mountains. That 9.1 rating? Yeah, I get it. It’s not perfect – the WiFi can be a bit patchy in some of the villas, and breakfast service gets pretty busy during peak season – but there’s something about this place that just works. Maybe it’s being far enough from Queenstown’s chaos but close enough to everything that matters, or maybe it’s just that rare combination of genuine luxury and actual comfort.

The most comfortable, beautiful stay. We are so glad we decided to stay out of Q’town and enjoy the absolute peace and quiet and incredible scenery at Millbrook. We looked forward to coming “home” every night to the beautiful fireplace, the most comfortable bed and the ensuite with bath and heated floors. Can’t speak more highly of our experience...

The staff were amazing, by far the best part of the stay. The room itself had a super comfy bed, a lovely deep bath, and a beautiful outlook to the golf course and mountains. I also really liked the heritage style of the rooms. I highly recommend having a spa treatment as the spa at Milbrook is one of the best I've been too! What could be...

Nice and spacious and clean.
