Paku Lodge Resort
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Paku Lodge Resort on The Esplanade, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the building itself is pretty understated from the street. But you know what? That’s actually part of its charm. This place sits right on Tairua’s waterfront, and I mean literally steps from the beach, which becomes obvious the moment you walk through the lobby and see those floor-to-ceiling windows facing the harbor.
The location is what really makes this place shine (and probably explains that 8.9 rating). You’re positioned perfectly between the Tairua River and the ocean, with Paku Hill rising up behind the town like some ancient guardian. I spent way too much time just watching the tide come and go from my room’s balcony – there’s something mesmerizing about how the whole landscape changes throughout the day. The staff mentioned that most guests end up hiking Paku Hill for the sunrise view, and honestly, it’s worth setting an alarm for. Takes about 20 minutes to get up there, and you’ll see the entire Coromandel coastline spread out below you.
What I really appreciated was how the lodge feels upscale without being pretentious – you know, the kind of place where you can wear flip-flops to breakfast but still feel like you’re somewhere special. The rooms are spacious (mine had this huge bathroom with a soaking tub), and the beds are actually comfortable, which… well, you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case even at four-star places. Parking was easy and free, which is a small miracle in any beachfront location. The only minor thing I’d mention is that The Esplanade can get a bit busy during summer weekends – nothing terrible, just the usual parade of day-trippers heading to Hot Water Beach or Cathedral Cove. But by evening, everything settles down and you get that peaceful coastal vibe back. I mean, there’s something pretty magical about falling asleep to the sound of waves lapping against the shore, especially when you know you’re just a short drive from some of New Zealand’s most stunning beaches.

Friendly greeting, excellent accommodation, wonderful view. It's the little things that mean so much when you're travelling and Paku Lodge delivered. Electric blankets, heated towel rails, fresh milk if you need it...it all adds to the experience. The folks running the place make you feel like honoured family guests. What could be improved:...

I'm so glad I made a last minute booking to stay here as there are so many things to love about this place! Firstly, the location is AMAZING! My room was only footsteps from the beach and I thoroughly enjoyed my evening stroll along the white sand and dipping my toes in the water! The room was self contained with a small kitchen and while cooking...
