Sapphire Springs Holiday Park and Thermal Pools
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Sapphire Springs on Hot Springs Road – the name sounds almost too good to be true, you know? But this place actually delivers on its promise in ways that surprised me. It’s tucked away in Katikati (which locals pronounce “Kah-ti-kah-ti” if you don’t want to sound like a total tourist), and you’ll know you’re getting close when you start seeing those rolling green hills that make this part of the Bay of Plenty so ridiculously photogenic.
What strikes you first isn’t the accommodation itself but those thermal pools – they’re the real deal, naturally heated and scattered around the property like someone just decided to drop little pieces of paradise wherever they felt right. The water temperature varies depending on which pool you choose, and I mean this in the best way possible, but there’s something wonderfully unselfconscious about the whole setup. No fancy marble or Instagram-perfect lighting, just honest-to-goodness hot springs that have been doing their thing long before anyone thought to build a holiday park around them. The minerals in the water leave your skin feeling surprisingly soft, though fair warning – you’ll smell faintly sulfurous for a bit afterward, which is completely normal and actually kind of reassuring that you’re getting the authentic experience.
The accommodation itself falls into that sweet spot between rustic and comfortable that’s honestly hard to find these days. They don’t have an official star rating, which initially made me a bit nervous, but after staying there I think it’s because they’re doing their own thing rather than trying to fit into some cookie-cutter category. The units are clean and well-maintained – nothing fancy, but everything works and the beds are actually comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses). Parking is right outside your door, which you’ll appreciate when you’re hauling groceries from the Katikati township about ten minutes down the road. Speaking of which, if you’re planning to cook, hit up the Four Square in town rather than trying to find a fancy supermarket – it’s got everything you need and the staff actually know where things are.
What I really love about this place is how it feels authentic to this part of New Zealand. You’re close enough to Tauranga (about 20 minutes) if you want city amenities, but far enough away that you can actually hear native birds in the morning instead of traffic. The thermal pools are busiest in the evenings – there’s something magical about soaking in hot water while watching the sun set over those hills – but if you’re an early riser like me, you might have them almost to yourself around 7 AM. The 8.8 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve been there; it’s not trying to be a luxury resort, but it absolutely nails what it is trying to be: a genuinely relaxing spot where you can soak in natural hot springs without any pretense or fuss.

It was noticed before the arrival and upon our arrival but I am not a big fan of the fact that you have to pay for the showers, even more when they're timed, nevertheless everything was Cristal clear about it.

Loved the options of pools and waterholes What could be improved: The shower needed a mat on the inside of our motel room. It became very slippery. In the spa area, it needed a new mat as that was really slippery and dangerous, and some parts around the big pool were slippery. I saw a few people slip. The rooms could do with a broom if that's...
