Grandeur Thermal Spa Resort
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Grandeur Thermal Spa Resort on Spa Road, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The name sounds pretty fancy, but this isn’t your typical five-star chain hotel situation. It’s more like someone took a really nice spa retreat and decided to make it into a proper place to stay, which honestly works better than it probably should.
The thing about Taupo is that everyone talks about the lake and the geothermal stuff, but most hotels just sort of… exist near it. This place actually gets it. You can smell the mineral springs the moment you step out of your car – not in an overwhelming sulfur way, more like that clean, earthy scent that makes you think your skin’s about to get seriously pampered. The thermal pools here aren’t just an afterthought either; they’re clearly the main event, and the rooms are built around that experience. I mean, my room had this massive window that looked right out onto the steam rising from the pools, which was pretty magical at sunrise (though fair warning – if you’re not a morning person, maybe request a room facing the other direction).
What I really appreciated was how they handle the whole boutique thing without being pretentious about it. The staff actually knows your name after day one, parking is never a nightmare like it can be down by the lake during summer, and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re comfortable and clean, though don’t expect cutting-edge design or anything. It’s more about the overall experience than fancy amenities. The thermal aspect is definitely the star here – after a day of hiking around Huka Falls or dealing with the tourist crowds at the Craters of the Moon, those mineral pools hit different. You know what surprised me though? How quiet it gets at night. Even though you’re not that far from town, something about the location just dampens all the noise.
I’d say this place works best if you’re the type of traveler who values unique experiences over polished perfection. It’s not going to compete with the big resort chains on amenities, but if you want to actually feel like you’re somewhere special rather than just anywhere with a nice view, it delivers. Plus, being on Spa Road puts you close enough to walk to a couple of decent cafés without having to drive into central Taupo every time you want coffee that doesn’t come from a hotel lobby machine. Just don’t come expecting ultra-luxury – come expecting something genuinely different that’ll probably leave you more relaxed than you’ve been in months.

found it to be a little cool in the main bedroom as all the heat rises and makes it to hot for the kids sleeping upstairs .

The facilities are pretty tired, but have been worked on to make them comfortable - the bed was very comfortable and bedding clean, the bathroom facilities were in good order with great pressure in the shower, and the heat pump provided lots of warmth on a winter evening What could be improved: The facilities were generally quite old and tired,...
