Hilton Queenstown Resort & Spa
You know what struck me first about the Hilton Queenstown? It’s not actually in the thick of downtown Queenstown chaos – and honestly, that’s the best thing about it. The resort sits on Peninsula Road in Kelvin Heights, which means you get those insane lake and mountain views without the backpacker crowds stumbling past your window at 2 AM. I mean, you’re still only about a 10-minute drive from Shotover Street when you want the action, but there’s something really satisfying about retreating back to this little peninsula bubble.
The location is pretty genius when you think about it. You’re positioned right where Lake Wakatipu does that dramatic bend, so from most rooms (definitely spring for a lake view if you can) you’re looking straight across at The Remarkables mountain range. The spa here actually capitalizes on this – I spent way too much time in their relaxation areas just staring out at the water. Speaking of the spa, it’s one of those places where you book a 60-minute treatment and somehow three hours disappear. The thermal pools outside are heated year-round, which is clutch because Queenstown weather can be… unpredictable, let’s say. There’s also this adults-only infinity pool that photographs ridiculously well, though it gets busy around sunset when everyone’s trying to capture that golden hour shot.
What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to feel luxurious without being stuffy – you know how some five-star places make you feel like you need to apologize for existing? Not here. The staff actually seems to get that most people are here for adventure stuff, so they’re genuinely helpful about organizing everything from Milford Sound day trips to bungy jumping bookings. The concierge team knows their stuff about timing too – like, they’ll tell you to hit the Skyline Gondola first thing in the morning before the tour buses arrive, or which helicopter companies actually have the best pilots (apparently this matters more than you’d think). Parking is complimentary, which sounds basic but you’ll appreciate it when you see what downtown hotels charge. The rooms are what you’d expect from Hilton – comfortable beds, decent coffee setup, those floor-to-ceiling windows that make you feel like you’re living in a postcard. Some of the bathrooms have separate soaking tubs, which is perfect after a day of hiking or skiing. Check-in was smooth, though I’d avoid arriving right around 4 PM when the tour groups tend to roll in. The resort does get busy during peak season (December-February and ski season), but even then it never felt cramped. I think it’s because the property is spread out enough, and there are plenty of quiet corners to escape to. For what it’s worth, the 8.4 rating feels about right – it’s genuinely excellent without being perfect, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

A very pleasant gesture from the hotel reception to arrange for a complimentary red wine and chocolates to celebrate our wedding anniversary! The hotel staff especially the young man from Germany are very helpful and polite. The room was lovely, bed comfortable and spotlessly clean.

The restaurant was very expensive for dinner, but there is a cheaper burger/pizza place on site.

The location and the view is out of this world. If you want to have the vibe of going to New Zealand and spend your time in a hotel with a lake view, this is absolutely the right choice.
