Brackenridge Country Retreat & Spa

62 White Rock Road, 5782 Martinborough , New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up White Rock Road – it’s one of those winding country lanes that makes you wonder if your GPS has lost its mind. But then you see the entrance to Brackenridge Country Retreat & Spa, and suddenly everything clicks. This place sits perfectly in the Martinborough landscape, looking like it’s been there forever even though you can tell they’ve put serious thought into every detail.
The thing about staying here is that you’re genuinely in wine country – I mean, you can practically roll out of bed and into some of New Zealand’s best pinot noir vineyards. Martinborough’s compact village center is maybe a ten-minute drive away, which is perfect because you get that peaceful retreat vibe without being completely cut off from civilization. The spa side of things is actually impressive; they’ve got this way of making treatments feel integrated with the surroundings rather than just stuck on as an afterthought. I found myself spending way more time in their relaxation areas than I’d planned, just listening to the native birds and watching the light change across the hills.
What really won me over, though, was how they handle the little things. The rooms have that perfect balance of country comfort without feeling like someone’s overly precious bed-and-breakfast. You know what I mean – quality linens and thoughtful touches, but you don’t feel like you need to tiptoe around. The staff clearly knows the area inside and out; they pointed me toward a couple of cellar doors I never would have found on my own, including one tiny operation that doesn’t even have proper signage. Parking’s easy (which sounds boring but matters when you’re dealing with rental cars and unfamiliar driveways), and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. The only minor thing I’d mention is that if you’re used to big city hotel amenities, this is more about unwinding than being constantly entertained – though honestly, that turned out to be exactly what I needed. By evening, when the valley gets that golden light that photographers go crazy for, you’ll understand why this place earned its reputation. It’s one of those spots that makes you immediately start planning your next visit before you’ve even checked out.

Olga from New Zealand (25 June 2025)
We stayed in a studio which was spacious with a lounge seating area and a small table for dining, in addition to a well-stocked kitchenette with supplies for cooking. The breakfast supplied was more than just a continental one with eggs, muesli, milk, nice bread, spreads, juice, and filter coffee - all local produce. The beds were particularly...
Tania from New Zealand (22 June 2025)
We’ve stayed before and love the cosiness of the rooms. Fireplaces and underfloor heating make it lovely for hunkering down in mid winter.
What could be improved: We can see it is starting to need a little TLC.

Breakfast was complimentary each day and used fresh local produce. Quiet surroundings and lovely staff. Opportunities to use pool, gym and spa treatments were great.

Carol from United Kingdom (27 February 2025)
Beautiful rural setting but only 5 minutes drive into town. Huge cottage prettily furnished. What could be improved: We were originally allocated an unwanted disabled room.Ut took two goes to find us an alternative which was ready for occupancy but we were pleased not to be charged for the upgrade. Breakfast supplies were quite basic in quality...
