Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Rydges Formosa Auckland Golf Resort, I wasn’t expecting much from a hotel way out in Beachlands. I mean, it’s a solid 45-minute drive from downtown Auckland, and you know how some of these “resort” places can oversell themselves. But actually stepping onto the property on Jack Lachland Drive, I got it. The place sits beautifully on what used to be the Formosa Golf Course, and you can still feel that spacious, rolling green atmosphere even though it’s been transformed into this surprisingly sophisticated retreat.

What really struck me was how they’ve managed to keep that golf course serenity without making it feel isolated or boring. The rooms – well, they’re genuinely comfortable in that understated way that makes you realize you’ve been staying in cramped city hotels for too long. Big windows, decent coffee setup (thank god), and honestly some of the better hotel WiFi I’ve encountered in New Zealand. The staff actually seem to know the area too, which is rarer than you’d think. They pointed me toward Pine Harbour Marina for dinner one night – just a few minutes down the road – and it ended up being one of those perfect Auckland evenings watching boats come in while the sun set over the Hauraki Gulf.

Here’s the thing about staying out in Beachlands though – you need to plan a bit. It’s not like you can just wander out for late-night snacks or catch an Uber every five minutes. But that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? The ferry to downtown runs from nearby Pine Harbour if you want that city fix, or you can drive the scenic route along the coast. Parking’s never an issue here (unlike everywhere else in Auckland), and the whole area has this relaxed, almost holiday-home vibe that makes you forget you’re technically still in the city limits. I found myself actually looking forward to that drive back each evening – especially coming from the chaos of Queen Street or the airport. The 8.2 rating makes sense when you consider it’s not trying to be a flashy city hotel or a wilderness lodge. It’s just really good at being what it is: a proper escape that doesn’t require you to rough it or spend a fortune.
