Big4 Aussie Outback Oasis Holiday Park

Big4 Aussie Outback Oasis Holiday Park Overview
You know what struck me first about Big4 Aussie Outback Oasis? The name’s a bit of a mouthful, but honestly, it delivers on that “oasis” promise more than you’d expect. Rolling up on Dr George Ellis Drive, you’re hit with this weird contrast – proper outback country stretching forever, then suddenly there’s this surprisingly well-maintained holiday park that actually feels like someone put thought into it.
I mean, Charters Towers isn’t exactly where most people plan their Queensland holidays, but that’s sort of the point. This place works because it embraces being in the middle of nowhere instead of pretending otherwise. The facilities are genuinely solid for a 4-star park – the pool area’s bigger than it needs to be and stays clean even when the red dust kicks up (which it will). What I really appreciated was how they’ve set up the sites with actual privacy between them. Too many holiday parks just cram you in like sardines, but here you can sit outside your caravan or cabin without feeling like you’re in your neighbor’s living room.
The staff seem to actually know the area, which matters more than you’d think when you’re this far inland. They’ll tell you the best time to hit the historic precinct in town (early morning before it gets brutal), or where to grab supplies without driving all the way back into the main strip. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that over-eager tourism board spiel, just practical info about Wi-Fi passwords and where the dump point is. Speaking of Wi-Fi, it’s decent enough for checking emails but don’t expect to stream Netflix in HD. The powered sites have reliable electricity, though I’d still bring a backup power bank because, well, outback life.
What surprised me was how quiet it gets at night – properly quiet, not city quiet. You’ll hear the occasional road train rumbling past, but mostly it’s just that massive outback silence that’s either deeply peaceful or slightly unnerving depending on your tolerance for isolation. The amenities block stays reasonably clean, hot water’s consistent, and there’s actually decent water pressure in the showers. Small things, but they matter when you’re road-tripping and haven’t had a proper wash in days.
Look, the 7.6 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it does everything you need without any major frustrations. The location works perfectly if you’re doing the inland Queensland route and need a proper stop between the coast and the Territory. Charters Towers itself is worth a day if you’re into gold rush history, and this park gives you a comfortable base without feeling like you’re camping rough. Just don’t expect resort-style luxury – this is honest outback accommodation that knows its audience and delivers accordingly.

Clean, comfortable accommodation. Friendly staff.
What could be improved: No wifi. When we are travelling this is very important. Both wifi addresses did not give internet access.

Cabin was private, front verandah overlooking a large open space play area ideal for the young children to play.
What could be improved: There is no handrails on the steps. (I didn't check first).
It's only 3 steps but medical conditions can dictate the need to hold.

Cabin was clean, nice pool

Extremely well appointed property. Cabin was very large. Loved the grounds and amenities. The fire pit area very nice. Pizza night on Wednesday. What a great idea!
What could be improved: The soap holder in bathroom was broken and the cover on exhaust fan was missing. Minor faults.

We stayed in a family cabin with queen bed, single bed and two bunks. Queen bed was super comfortable. Room was clean and tidy. Shower was average but had great water pressure. Facilities were great and there was nothing we went without. Pool is large and fairly clean given the amount of leaves they'd have to deal with. Separate pool that had a...

Cabin was great.
What could be improved: Elderly couple would have preferred low level cabin no steps.
Megan from Australia (April 28, 2024)
The deluxe cabin was great size for a family. Bed was comfy. The grounds are very shady and the pool was fantastic. We had such a good time. Great park for families, safe for the kids to ride their bikes and the go karts were fun to hire. What could be improved: The grounds could use a tidy up. Lots of big sticks on the ground near the cabins...
