Windang Tourist Park

Windang Tourist Park Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Windang Tourist Park on Fern Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries are the ones that surprise you, and this little spot absolutely did that.
The thing about Windang is that it’s one of those coastal towns that locals have been quietly enjoying while everyone else rushes past to the bigger beach destinations. The tourist park sits just a stone’s throw from Lake Illawarra, and I mean that literally – you can actually hear the water lapping when it’s quiet in the evenings. The setup here is pretty straightforward, nothing fancy, but everything’s clean and well-maintained in that no-nonsense Australian way. Check-in was smooth (the staff actually knew the area and gave me proper directions to the good fishing spots), and parking… well, there’s plenty of it, which is more than I can say for most coastal places during summer. The cabins themselves are honestly better than expected – sure, they’re not luxury suites, but they’re comfortable and everything works. I particularly appreciated that the beds were actually decent quality, not the usual tourist park mattresses that feel like sleeping on cardboard.
What really makes this place work, though, is the location and the vibe. You’re literally five minutes from Windang Beach, which is this gorgeous stretch of sand that never seems to get as crowded as the beaches further north. The lake is perfect for kayaking or just sitting with a coffee in the morning – I spent way too much time doing exactly that. And here’s something the booking sites don’t tell you: the sunsets over the lake are absolutely spectacular, especially if you grab a spot near the water’s edge around 6 PM. The whole area has this relaxed, unpretentious feel that’s getting harder to find along the NSW coast. During my stay, I noticed it attracts a good mix of families doing the classic Aussie holiday thing and couples looking for a quiet getaway without the tourist trap pricing. The facilities are solid – clean bathrooms, decent camp kitchen if you’re staying in one of the powered sites, and the playground keeps the kids happy. I mean, it’s not going to win any design awards, but everything’s functional and well-kept. One thing worth mentioning: if you’re coming in peak season, book ahead because word’s getting out about this place, and honestly, I can see why it’s scoring an 8.8 rating from guests. It delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

We booked three cabins for a family holiday and enjoyed our time there. Only a short walk to the beach and only a small park so we felt secure letting the kids ride around on their bikes. Very well kept property..
What could be improved: The pillows were a bit thin.
