William Creek Camp Ground & Units
William Creek Camp Ground & Units Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when you first pull up to William Creek Camp Ground & Units on Bill Rivers Avenue, it’s not going to blow you away with fancy facades or marble lobbies. But here’s the thing about this place that most people don’t get until they’ve actually stayed in the outback: sometimes the most unassuming spots end up being exactly what you need. William Creek is literally in the middle of nowhere (I mean, the closest real town is hours away), and this little 3-star setup has figured out how to make that isolation feel like a feature, not a bug.
What actually impressed me was how they’ve managed to create this weird sense of community in such a remote spot. The units are pretty basic – clean beds, decent bathrooms, air conditioning that works when you need it most – but honestly, you’re not going to be spending much time indoors anyway. The real magic happens in the communal areas where you’ll find yourself chatting with other travelers about road conditions, where to spot wedgie eagles, or whether it’s worth the detour to Lake Eyre (spoiler: it usually is). The staff here actually know the area, which sounds obvious but trust me, it’s rarer than you’d think. They’ll tell you when the mail plane’s coming in – yeah, that’s still a thing out here – and which tracks are passable after recent rains.
The camping side of things is where this place really shines, honestly. You’ve got powered sites that aren’t cramped together like sardines, and the amenities block is kept surprisingly clean considering how much red dirt blows through here. I mean, you’re going to have dust on everything regardless, but at least the showers have decent pressure. What I really appreciated was the little things – like how they’ve positioned the sites so you’re not staring directly into your neighbor’s camp kitchen, and there’s actually some shelter from the wind that can absolutely howl through here at night. The pub next door (because of course there’s a pub) serves up cold beer and surprisingly decent counter meals, plus it’s where you’ll get the best local intel about scenic flights over the salt lakes or whether the dingo fence road is worth attempting. Sure, it gets a bit rowdy some evenings, but honestly, after a day driving through endless scrubland, a bit of human noise feels pretty welcome. Just don’t expect five-star service or Instagram-perfect views – this is raw outback hospitality, and it works because it doesn’t try to be anything else.

Loves the whole vibe of the accommodation, that’s why I picked it. What could be improved: We stayed in a range of places on our road trip hand s Dow. This one was the fancier of all of them the only thing that let it down was the shower, the water you got it to the right temp and than it would go cold after a moment or so and it did this...

Clean and comfortable, friendly staff and good meals.
Alice from Australia (May 13, 2024)
Cabins were extremely basic (literally just a bed) but very clean and comfortable.
Staff was lovely.
There is a good "vibe" around.
Bathrooms were clean and good water pressure.
What could be improved: Couldn't keep the window blinds up.

Giuseppe from Australia (August 30, 2023)
It ticked all the boxes we were looking for, for an overnight stop out in the middle of nowhere - across the dirt track from the infamous William Creek Pub. Clean, comfortable (king !) bed, quiet, air conditioned, fridge and self contained bathroom with good water supply. Noted they r currently building glamping tents ✔️✔️ The pub had good food,...
Lesley from Australia (October 9, 2022)
