Portland Holiday Village

You know what surprised me about Portland Holiday Village? It’s one of those places that doesn’t try too hard to impress you upfront, but somehow ends up being exactly what you needed. I mean, Percy Street isn’t exactly the flashiest address in Portland – it’s tucked away from the main tourist drag near the waterfront – but that actually works in its favor. You’re close enough to walk down to the harbor in about eight minutes (I timed it), yet far enough back that you’re not dealing with the weekend crowds stumbling past your window.

The whole setup feels refreshingly honest for a 3-star place. Check-in was smooth, no fuss, and the staff actually seemed to know the area when I asked about decent coffee nearby (there’s this little spot called Bentley’s just two blocks over that locals swear by). The rooms have that slightly dated but well-maintained vibe – think clean lines, comfortable beds, and everything works properly without being Instagram-worthy. What I really appreciated was the attention to practical stuff: proper blackout curtains, decent water pressure, and – this might sound small but it matters – outlets positioned where you’d actually want to plug things in. The air conditioning runs a bit loud, honestly, but Portland can get surprisingly muggy in summer, so you’ll probably be grateful for it.

Here’s the thing that really sold me on this place though – it feels like it’s run by people who understand what travelers actually want. Parking is included and easy (trust me, this is huge in Portland), there’s a decent continental breakfast that starts early enough for people catching the ferry to the mainland, and the location puts you within walking distance of both the Saturday markets and those coastal walking tracks without the premium price tag of the harbor-front hotels. I stayed here during the Easter long weekend, which is absolutely chaotic in Portland, and while everywhere else was packed to the gills, this place maintained this calm, almost residential feel. The 8.7 rating makes total sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be luxury, but it nails all the fundamentals really well. Perfect for people who want a proper base to explore from without paying resort prices for amenities they won’t use anyway.
