Peppers Bluewater Resort

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Peppers Bluewater Resort – you know how these highway hotels can be, especially when you’re driving that long stretch on State Highway 8. But the moment you turn into the property, Lake Tekapo just spreads out in front of you like someone pulled back a curtain. The resort sits right on the shoreline, and I mean right on it – you can literally hear the water lapping against the rocks from most of the rooms.

What actually impressed me wasn’t the fancy lobby (though it’s nice enough), but how they’ve managed to make a 4.5-star place feel… well, not stuffy. The staff knows their stuff about the area – they’ll tell you the best spots for stargazing without the crowds, or when the Church of the Good Shepherd gets too packed with tour buses. Speaking of stargazing, this is probably one of the few hotels where you can see the Milky Way clearly right from your balcony. The light pollution is practically non-existent once you get away from the main township area, and honestly, that alone makes it worth staying here instead of in town.

The rooms are solid – nothing groundbreaking, but they’ve got those floor-to-ceiling windows that make you feel like you’re camping, except with proper heating and a decent shower. I stayed in November, which is shoulder season, so it wasn’t crazy busy, but I imagine summer gets pretty hectic. The restaurant overlooks the lake, and while it’s not cheap (nothing in Tekapo really is), the salmon is actually local and the wine list has some decent Central Otago options. Pro tip: if you’re driving the tourist loop, this makes a perfect base for day trips to Mount Cook or even Queenstown if you don’t mind a longer drive. The parking is free and plentiful, which – trust me – you’ll appreciate after dealing with some of the other resort towns around here. The only downside? The wifi can be spotty, but honestly, you’re here for the scenery, not your Instagram feed.

Experience exceptional vacation village resorts that feature spacious villas, recreational facilities, and personalized services designed to create memorable family holidays and romantic getaways.
