Methven Resort
You know what’s funny about Methven? Most people blow right through this little Canterbury town on their way to Mount Hutt for skiing, but honestly, they’re missing out on one of the more interesting places to actually stay overnight. The Methven Resort sits right there on Main Street – and I mean literally on it, you can’t miss the place – but don’t let the “resort” name fool you into expecting some massive complex. This is more like someone took a really thoughtful approach to hospitality and decided star ratings were sort of beside the point.
I’ll be honest, when I first pulled up, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The building has this understated elegance that feels deliberately un-flashy, which actually works perfectly for Methven’s vibe. Inside, there’s this warmth that’s hard to fake – maybe it’s the way the staff actually remembers your name, or how the common areas feel lived-in rather than staged for photos. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re exactly what you’d want after a day on the mountain or exploring the Canterbury Plains. Nothing over-the-top, but everything works the way it should, and the beds are honestly some of the most comfortable I’ve encountered in New Zealand. The heating is solid too, which matters more than you’d think when those Canterbury winds start howling.
What really sets this place apart is how it fits into Methven itself. You’re a two-minute walk from the Blue Pub (locals will know), and if you’re here during ski season, the shuttle pickups are right outside your door. But here’s the thing – even if you’re not here for Mount Hutt, there’s something pretty great about being based in a town that feels authentically Kiwi rather than tourist-polished. The staff knows the area inside and out, so whether you want to know about the hot pools at Hanmer Springs or which vineyard tours are actually worth your time, they’ll steer you right. Parking’s never an issue, the wifi works reliably (I mean, it’s not fiber speeds, but it does the job), and check-in is refreshingly straightforward. That 8.5 rating feels about right – it’s the kind of place that does everything well without trying to be something it’s not, which honestly feels pretty rare these days.

I loved the resort layout with the bar and restaurant area and open fire. It's a majestic old building, the likes of which you don't see very often. Complimentary breakfast was very nice too!

A little noise from the surrounding rooms at night, walls may be a little thin!
