Manot Vacances – Gites en bord de Vienne
First Impressions
You know what struck me first about Manot Vacances – Gites en bord de Vienne? The name literally tells you everything — these gites really are right on the banks of the Vienne River, and honestly, that location is pure magic. This four-star property sits in the tiny village of Manot, where the loudest sound you’ll hear is probably water flowing over rocks. I mean, when couples rate a place this highly (and they really do here), you know there’s something special about the romance factor.
The Setting
The Vienne River becomes your backyard here, and I’m not exaggerating when I say guests have rated this location a 9.0 — that’s almost unheard of. You can literally step out of your gite and be at the water’s edge in seconds. The village itself has maybe a dozen buildings, which sounds limiting but actually creates this incredible sense of escape from everything. Recent guests keep mentioning how the combination of river views and complete tranquility makes this place feel like a secret hideaway that somehow earned four stars.
The Accommodations
Each gite functions like a self-contained apartment, which gives you way more freedom than a typical hotel room. The kitchen setup means you can grab fresh ingredients from nearby markets (there’s a lovely one in Confolens, about 15 minutes away) and cook while listening to the river. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to keep that rustic gite charm while adding modern touches — you’re not roughing it, but you’re definitely not in some sterile hotel chain either.
Activities and Surroundings
The Vienne River isn’t just pretty to look at — it’s actually perfect for kayaking, and the staff can point you toward rental spots nearby. The walking paths along the riverbank connect to longer hiking trails that wind through the Charente countryside, and honestly, some of those views will make you understand why this region stays relatively undiscovered by mass tourism. There’s also decent fishing if that’s your thing, though you’ll want to check local regulations first. The nearby town of Confolens has a surprising number of good restaurants for such a small place.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t for everyone — if you need constant entertainment or city energy, you’ll be bored. But if you’re looking for a place where you can actually hear yourself think, where couples can reconnect without distractions, this hits differently. The 8.2 rating reflects guests who came here specifically for peace and nature, and found exactly that. The river location means you wake up to water sounds instead of traffic, and there’s something about that rhythm that just slows everything down in the best possible way. Plus, having your own space with a proper kitchen means you can create your own schedule — no rushing to breakfast or dinner times.

It was clean and was equipped with everything you needed. Once we got the heating working, it was lovely and warm.
I can imagine in the summer it would be beautiful - it was right on the River Vienne and even for us, in the cold and rain, it was in a lovely environment. The goats and sheep were lovely to watch in the morning.
