So I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to LAUR HOTELS Experience & Elegance in Altinkum, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The name’s a bit much, you know? But actually, once you get past the marketing speak, this place has some real character. It sits right in that sweet spot of Didim where you’re close enough to hear the Aegean lapping at the shore, but far enough back that you’re not dealing with the chaos of the main beach strip at all hours.

The thing about Altinkum is that most tourists stick to the obvious spots, but this hotel is positioned where you actually get a feel for the area. You’re a quick walk to those golden sand beaches everyone raves about (and honestly, they’re not wrong – the sand really does have this almost honey-colored gleam in the late afternoon). What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know their stuff about the local scene. The front desk guy – I think his name was Mehmet – casually mentioned the best time to visit the Apollo Temple ruins in nearby Didyma, and he was spot on. Go early morning or late afternoon, skip the midday crush entirely.

The rooms themselves are well, they’re comfortable in that distinctly Turkish hospitality way. You’ll find those little touches that show someone’s actually thinking – good water pressure (trust me, this matters more than you think when you’re washing off beach sand), and the air conditioning that actually works without sounding like a helicopter landing. I mean, it’s not going to blow you away with cutting-edge design, but there’s something refreshing about a place that focuses on getting the basics really right. The balcony views vary depending on which side you’re on – I got lucky with a partial sea view, though some rooms face the courtyard area which is quieter if you’re a light sleeper. Speaking of sleep, the beds are actually decent, and the blackout curtains do their job if you want to sleep past the early Turkish sunrise.

What really sets this place apart though is its position for exploring the real Didim. You’re not stuck in some resort bubble – there’s this great little lokanta about ten minutes’ walk away where the pide is incredible and costs about half what you’d pay at the touristy spots. The hotel’s pool area gets busy during peak season (July and August are pretty intense), but if you time it right – early morning or that golden hour before dinner – you’ll practically have it to yourself. The 7.3 rating seems about right, honestly. It’s not perfect, but it delivers on what it promises without the inflated prices you see closer to the main tourist drag. For what you’re paying, especially if you catch it during shoulder season, it’s actually quite solid.
