HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Glan Gwna country holiday park looking for the Lakeside view chalet, I wasn’t entirely sure what I’d gotten myself into. The whole setup is tucked away on Lower Lakeside in Caeathro, which is basically this quiet little spot that most people drive right past on their way to Snowdonia proper. But you know what? That turned out to be exactly the point.

The chalet itself sits right there overlooking the lake (hence the name, obviously), and I mean properly overlooking it – not some distant glimpse through trees that hotels love to call “water views.” You can actually hear the water lapping from the bedroom window, especially in the early morning when everything’s still quiet. The whole place has this sort of rustic-meets-boutique vibe that works way better than it should on paper. They’ve clearly put thought into the details without going overboard – the kind of place where you notice the good coffee setup and the fact that someone actually ironed the curtains. It’s not trying to be some fancy country house hotel, and honestly, that’s what makes it work.

What really sold me on the place was how it sits in the landscape. Caeathro’s one of those Welsh villages that feels properly tucked away – you’re close enough to Caernarfon (maybe ten minutes by car) to grab dinner or hit the castle, but far enough out that you actually feel like you’ve escaped somewhere. The holiday park itself is surprisingly well-maintained without being sterile, if that makes sense. There’s proper parking right by the chalet, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling luggage and trying to figure out unfamiliar roads in the dark. The whole area goes properly quiet after about 9 PM, which is either perfect or potentially boring depending on what you’re after.

I’ll tell you what impressed me most – they seem to understand that people come here for the setting, not for room service and concierge desks. The chalet’s got everything you actually need (decent shower pressure, reliable WiFi, that coffee situation I mentioned), but it doesn’t overwhelm you with unnecessary extras. You can tell someone who knows the area helped design the experience. They’ve got local walking maps that actually show interesting routes, not just the obvious tourist trails, and the recommendations for nearby pubs are spot-on. The Crown at Llanfairpwll is worth the drive, by the way – proper Welsh hospitality and they do this lamb dish that’s absolutely brilliant.

The lake view really is the star here, especially if you catch it in the late afternoon when the light hits just right. I spent way more time than I planned just sitting there with a cup of tea, watching the water and honestly not thinking about much of anything. It’s that kind of place – not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but genuinely restful in a way that’s harder to find than you’d expect. Perfect for couples who want somewhere peaceful, or anyone who needs to properly switch off for a few days.
