You know what? I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Ingoldale Holiday Park on Roman Bank – the name makes it sound like your typical caravan site, but honestly, this place surprised me in the best way. It’s got this quirky, independent vibe that you just don’t find at the chain hotels, and after spending a few days there, I actually get why they don’t bother with the whole star rating thing. Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t fit neatly into categories.

The location is pretty brilliant if you ask me – you’re literally a stone’s throw from Ingoldmells beach (I mean, you can hear the waves if you open your window), but far enough back from the main Fantasy Island madness that you’re not dealing with screaming kids at all hours. Roman Bank itself is one of those proper seaside roads where you’ve got everything you need within walking distance, though I’d recommend bringing a car because the Skegness area is much better when you can hop around to different spots. The parking situation is actually decent, which – let’s be honest – is half the battle at these coastal places during summer season.

What really won me over was how the staff clearly know their regulars and treat newcomers like they’re already part of the family. The whole setup feels more like staying at someone’s well-run guesthouse than a commercial operation, if that makes sense. The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in quality without being shabby – proper thick curtains that actually block out the morning sun, decent water pressure in the shower, and those little touches like having a proper kettle instead of one of those tiny hotel ones that take forever. I mean, the décor won’t win any design awards, but everything works and feels genuine rather than trying too hard to be Instagram-perfect. The beds are surprisingly comfortable too, which matters more than fancy wallpaper when you’ve been walking the beach all day. During peak season (basically July and August), it does get busier and you’ll want to book well ahead, but that’s true anywhere decent along this stretch of coast. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays in the evenings – you get families during the day, but it’s not a party crowd, so you can actually get some sleep.
