Heva Eco Lodge
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places on Easter Island, and honestly? Heva Eco Lodge is something else entirely. When you first pull up to this spot on Miru street – which, by the way, is perfectly positioned away from the main tourist chaos but still walkable to everything – you immediately get that this isn’t your typical hotel situation. The owner clearly put serious thought into creating something that actually belongs on Rapa Nui, you know what I mean?
The eco angle isn’t just marketing fluff here, which I appreciated. They’ve got this whole rainwater collection system that actually works (I was curious and asked), solar panels that don’t look like an afterthought, and the landscaping uses native plants that require basically zero irrigation – pretty smart considering water’s always been precious on the island. What really got me though was how quiet it is at night. I mean, Hanga Roa isn’t exactly Manhattan, but even here you get generator noise and the occasional late-night revelry from other hotels. At Heva? You’re hearing the ocean and maybe some wind through the eucalyptus trees. That’s it.
The rooms themselves feel more like staying at a really design-conscious friend’s place than a hotel. Everything’s made from local materials – the wooden furniture has this gorgeous natural grain that catches the light just right, and the linens are actually comfortable (not that scratchy eco-fabric you sometimes get at sustainable places). I stayed during shoulder season in May, and honestly, I think that’s the sweet spot. You’re not dealing with the January crowds, but the weather’s still perfect and you can actually get dinner reservations around town without planning three days ahead. The staff – and this matters on an island where everyone knows everyone – are locals who genuinely care about the place. They’ll tell you which moai sites to hit early morning before the tour buses arrive, or where to grab empanadas that don’t cost tourist prices.
Here’s the thing about Easter Island that a lot of people don’t realize until they’re here – it’s remote in a way that’s almost hard to comprehend. Like, really remote. So when you find a place that manages to feel luxurious without being completely disconnected from where you actually are, that’s special. Heva gets that balance right. You’re comfortable, the WiFi works when you need it (though honestly, try to disconnect a bit), and the whole experience feels authentic rather than like some eco-resort dropped in from Costa Rica or wherever. The 9.7 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s the kind of place that makes you want to extend your stay, except good luck changing your flight from Rapa Nui without paying a fortune. Trust me on that one.
