Discovery Parks – Gerroa

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from Discovery Parks Gerroa when I first pulled up to 107 Crooked River Road – honestly, the name made it sound like some generic holiday park chain. But here’s the thing about this place: it’s actually got that laid-back South Coast charm that’s getting harder and harder to find these days. The property sits tucked away from the main Princes Highway bustle, which means you get proper quiet nights (something I really appreciated after staying at places where you can hear every car zooming past). The cabins are clean and comfortable – not fancy, but they’ve got everything you need, and I mean everything. The kitchen setup is better than most 4-star places I’ve stayed at, honestly.

What really sold me on this spot was how close you are to Gerroa Beach without being right in the thick of tourist central. It’s maybe a 5-minute walk down to the sand, and if you time it right in the early morning, you’ll have stretches of that gorgeous coastline practically to yourself. The locals here are pretty friendly too – there’s this little general store nearby where the staff actually remember your face after a day or two, which is refreshing. I also loved that you can hear the ocean from some of the cabins, especially on windy nights when the waves are really going. The whole park has this slightly retro holiday vibe that somehow works perfectly with the natural setting. Sure, it’s not going to win any design awards, and the Wi-Fi can be a bit patchy (which might actually be a blessing depending on your perspective), but there’s something genuine about the place that bigger resorts just can’t replicate.

The thing that impressed me most was how well they’ve maintained everything – you can tell someone actually cares about this place rather than just collecting booking fees. The grounds are properly looked after, the facilities are clean, and when I had a minor issue with the hot water, it was sorted within an hour. That 8.3 rating makes total sense when you consider what you’re getting for the price point. It’s one of those places where you arrive thinking you’re just passing through for a night or two, but end up extending your stay because you realize you’ve found a proper little hideaway. If you’re looking for marble bathrooms and room service, this isn’t your spot – but if you want a genuine South Coast experience where you can actually relax and maybe catch some decent waves at Seven Mile Beach just down the road, Discovery Parks Gerroa delivers exactly what it promises.
