Lorne Foreshore Caravan Park
Look, I’ll be straight with you – Lorne Foreshore Caravan Park isn’t trying to be fancy, and that’s honestly what makes it work so well. You’re literally right on Great Ocean Road (like, address number 2, so you can’t get much closer), and I mean *right there* – you can hear the ocean from pretty much anywhere in the park. The first time I pulled in, I was actually surprised by how big the place is. It sprawls along the foreshore, and while some sites are better than others, even the back rows aren’t terrible because the whole area has this relaxed, unpretentious vibe that just works.
What really got me was the location – and I don’t mean that in a brochure way. You can literally walk to Lorne’s main beach in about three minutes, maybe five if you’re dragging kids and beach gear. The pier’s right there, and if you’re into fishing or just want to walk off a big dinner, it’s perfect for that evening stroll thing. During summer (which gets absolutely packed, fair warning), you’re close enough to everything that you don’t need to move your car once you’re settled. The local shops, that famous bakery everyone raves about, the pubs – it’s all walkable. Though honestly, parking in town during peak season is a nightmare anyway, so being able to leave your car at the park is actually a huge advantage.
The facilities are what you’d expect from a 3-star place – clean amenities blocks, decent camp kitchen, nothing flash but everything works. I’ve stayed in caravan parks that charge twice as much and offer half the location benefits. The staff actually seem to know what they’re doing too, which isn’t always a given with these family-run places. Check-in was smooth, they knew the area well enough to give decent restaurant recommendations (avoid the touristy spots on the main strip, they said – good advice). One thing though – if you’re sensitive to noise, maybe request a site away from Great Ocean Road itself. It’s not exactly a highway, but there’s definitely traffic, especially during the day when everyone’s driving the coastal route. The sound of waves kind of masks it at night, but mornings can be a bit busy with the tour buses starting their runs.
You know what really sealed it for me? Walking back from dinner one evening and seeing families playing cricket on the grass areas while the sun was setting over the water. It felt like actual Australia, not the sanitized version you get at some of the resort-style places. The park has this unpretentious, community feel – people chat over the camp kitchen sinks, kids run around together, and everyone’s just there to enjoy the coast without breaking the bank. For the price and the location, especially if you’re doing the Great Ocean Road properly, it’s honestly hard to beat. Just book early if you’re planning a summer visit – this place fills up fast once word gets around.

Beautiful location, we got a cabin right by the river and there were kangaroos, ducks, cockatoos and other birds around. Foodworks walking distance away and quaint cafes right outside

The studio cabin was spacious, clean and well equipped. The bed was firm but comfortable. Bed linen and towels were very good. Check in was easy and the staff very nice. What could be improved: Our expectations in terms of location were definitely not met. The cabin wasn't in the foreshore position as indicated in the name of the caravan park. It...

- access was straightforward; easy to locate - good proximity to downtown Lorne - access (unit #1) was "too public" for that design of unit... although the entrance door did face the best location under the circumstances - interesting side table lights - they work - kitchen layout and amenities were good - close to food shopping store (right...
