Discovery Parks – Echuca

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Discovery Parks Echuca on River Avenue – I mean, it’s tucked away in this sort of industrial-meets-residential part of town that doesn’t exactly scream “vacation paradise.” But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you from the street. This place actually gets it right in ways that matter, especially if you’re planning to spend any real time exploring the Murray River area instead of just lounging around your accommodation.

What really won me over was how they’ve managed to balance that family-friendly park atmosphere without making it feel like a circus. The cabins are genuinely well-maintained – not that fake-rustic stuff you see everywhere, but actually comfortable with proper kitchens and decent Wi-Fi (which, let’s be honest, can be hit-or-miss once you get outside Melbourne). The powered sites are spacious enough that you’re not hearing your neighbor’s entire conversation over dinner, and the amenities block is kept surprisingly clean considering how busy this place gets during school holidays. I stayed in one of their deluxe cabins and was pleasantly surprised by the air conditioning – you’ll appreciate that if you’re visiting during an Echuca summer, trust me.

The location is actually pretty clever once you figure out the lay of the land. You’re maybe a ten-minute walk to the historic port area where all the paddle steamers dock, and it’s an easy bike ride into the main part of town if you want to hit up the shops on Hare Street or grab a proper coffee. What I really liked was being close enough to everything without dealing with the tourist crowds right outside your door – you can actually hear the river at night instead of car doors slamming. The staff seem to know their stuff about local attractions too, which is refreshing after dealing with so many places where the front desk person clearly lives two towns over and has never actually done any of the things they’re recommending. During my stay, they pointed me toward this great little walking track along the river that I definitely would have missed otherwise, and honestly, those kinds of insider tips make all the difference when you’re trying to get the most out of a short trip.
