Castaways Resort

685 Karioitahi Rd, 2683 Waiuku, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled into Castaways Resort on Karioitahi Road – the drive out from Auckland takes you through some pretty rural farmland before you hit the coast, and for a minute there I thought I’d taken a wrong turn. But then you crest that final hill and suddenly there’s this sweeping black sand beach stretching out forever, with the Tasman Sea doing its moody thing in the distance. The resort sits right there overlooking it all, and I mean, the setting alone is worth the trip.
What really got me about this place (and I’ve stayed at plenty of beachfront spots around New Zealand) is how they’ve managed to feel upscale without being stuffy about it. The rooms are actually spacious – not like those cramped hotel boxes you get in the city – and every single one has these massive windows facing the water. You know what though? The real winner is stepping out onto your balcony in the morning with coffee and watching the surfers catch waves at Karioitahi Beach. The surf here isn’t Raglan-level famous, but it’s consistent, and honestly less crowded than the big-name spots. I watched this one guy out there for like twenty minutes just because the light was hitting the water perfectly.
The staff here gets it too – they’re not hovering over you every five minutes, but when you need something, they actually know the area. Like, the front desk woman told me about this little fish and chips place in Waiuku town (about ten minutes inland) that I never would’ve found otherwise, and it turned out to be incredible. Speaking of food, the resort restaurant is solid – nothing too fancy, but they do this green-lipped mussel dish that’s basically perfect after a day walking the beach. The wine list leans heavy on local stuff from the Waitakere region, which I appreciate. Parking’s easy, check-in was quick, and the whole place has this relaxed vibe that makes you want to just… slow down, you know? Only real downside is that the Wi-Fi can be spotty in some rooms (mine was fine, but I heard other guests mentioning it), and if you’re expecting nightlife, well, you’re looking at a forty-minute drive back toward Auckland. But honestly? That’s kind of the point. This isn’t a party resort – it’s where you go when you want to remember that New Zealand’s coastline is absolutely wild and beautiful, and sometimes you need to get away from everything to appreciate that.

What could be improved: Villa cold when we arrived. Would have been nice if heating had been turned on. But did not take long to warm up.

Location was remote with open acreage surrounds and sweeping oceans views. Bed was comfy and room clean. No noise, easy access to restaurant (get there early to enjoy the view if having dinner).
