Calthwaite Hall Lodges
You know what’s funny about Calthwaite Hall Lodges? I almost drove right past it the first time – it’s tucked away in this tiny Cumbrian village that honestly feels like it hasn’t changed much since the 1800s. The whole place sits on the grounds of what used to be a proper country estate, and when you pull up the gravel drive (there’s plenty of parking, thank god), you get this immediate sense that you’ve stumbled onto something a bit special. The lodges themselves are scattered around the property in a way that feels intentional but not contrived – like someone actually thought about privacy instead of just cramming in as many rooms as possible.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to do the boutique thing without being precious about it. I mean, yes, the interiors are gorgeous – all exposed beams and modern touches that somehow work together – but it’s the little stuff that shows they get it. The coffee situation is actually sorted (proper beans, not instant), the heating works reliably (crucial in this part of the Lakes), and honestly, the beds are some of the most comfortable I’ve encountered. During my stay in October, the only sound at night was the occasional sheep bleating in the distance, which is either charming or mildly annoying depending on your tolerance for rural life. The staff seem to be locals mostly, and they have that genuine Northern friendliness that you can’t fake – they’ll sort you out with directions to the better walking routes or tell you which pub in the village does the best Sunday roast.
Location-wise, you’re about fifteen minutes from Penrith if you need proper shops or train connections, but the real draw is being right on the doorstep of the northern Lakes without the Windermere crowds. Ullswater’s maybe twenty minutes away, and if you’re into walking, the fells around here are brilliant – challenging enough to feel accomplished but not so brutal that you need serious gear. The whole setup works whether you’re doing the romantic weekend thing or just need a base for exploring that isn’t another generic chain hotel. Fair warning though – this isn’t the place if you want a swimming pool or room service at midnight. It’s more about getting away from all that nonsense and remembering why you wanted to visit the Lake District in the first place. The 8.8 rating makes sense when you consider what they’re actually trying to do here – it’s not trying to be everything to everyone, just really good at being a proper retreat in one of England’s most beautiful corners.

We stayed in one of the micro cabins. Must admit, when I saw it I thought it was going to be too small, but it had everything we needed for our stay and we loved the place. We had beautiful views and lots of space around the cabin. The hot tub was an added bonus and we used it everyday. We were visited by 2 beautiful peacocks throughout our stay...

Lovely location, set back. Safe environment for our three year old. Staff very attentive at the pub/restaurant. The best Sunday dinner I’ve had for a long time, roast beef was ‘melt in the mouth’ exceptional. Great local lager and choice of other beverages. Three peacocks live there which are very friendly and came to see us both mornings. Also...
