Awaroa Lodge

11 Awaroa Bay, 7120 Awa-iti, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Awaroa Lodge, I thought it was just another overpriced eco-resort trying to capitalize on Abel Tasman’s popularity. But honestly? This place actually gets it right. You’re literally sitting in Awaroa Bay, which means you can only get here by boat, helicopter, or hiking the coastal track – and that isolation is exactly what makes it special. I mean, there’s something pretty magical about being dropped off by water taxi and realizing your biggest decision for the next few days is whether to kayak before or after lunch.
The lodge itself feels more like a really well-thought-out home than a hotel, if that makes sense. The owners clearly know this area inside and out – they’ll casually mention the best time to spot fur seals (early morning, by the way) or which tides are perfect for exploring the tidal pools near Tonga Quarry. What really struck me was how they’ve managed to keep things comfortable without destroying what makes this corner of the national park so incredible. The rooms are clean and thoughtfully designed, with those big windows that frame the bay perfectly, but you’re not getting fancy turndown service or a concierge – this isn’t that kind of place, and honestly, that’s exactly the point.
You know what surprised me most? How quiet it gets at night. I’m talking proper silence – no traffic, no city hum, just the sound of water lapping against the shore and maybe some native birds settling in for the evening. During summer it can get pretty busy with day visitors arriving by water taxi (the 11 AM crowd is… substantial), but by late afternoon you’ve basically got the whole bay to yourselves again. The food is actually quite good – they clearly care about sourcing locally, and after a day of hiking or kayaking, even simple meals taste pretty fantastic. Fair warning though: if you’re expecting to pop out for dinner alternatives, well, you’re in the middle of a national park accessible only by boat. Plan accordingly. But really, that’s the whole appeal – you’re trading convenience for something you can’t get anywhere else, and for a 4-star spot with an 8.7 rating, they’ve struck that balance surprisingly well.

Overall, we liked the property, and its loction within the national park. There are nicer beaches around the area, but the buildings and layout were very nice. Unfortunately, our attempt to find glow worms was unsuccessful, but it is a cool feature. AirCon was useful and appreciated. Restaurant has a nice setting, with entirely friendly staff.

What could be improved: Not much to discredit & we were there less than 24hours however another bathroom in the family room would of be good

Beautiful lodge within the Abel Tasman National Park. There are no roads here, so you need to arrange for a water taxi or hike a long distance. We stayed in a lovely room set among the trees. The room was clean and comfortable. The rooms are close to the main lodge for meals and there is a nice lounge area there as well. We enjoyed dinner and...
