When I first pulled up to Aldeia do Priolo, honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this four-star property tucked away in Nordeste. It’s named after the Azorean bullfinch, a rare bird that’s only found on São Miguel island, which gives you a hint about just how special and untouched this corner of the Azores really is. The moment I stepped out of my car (free parking right on site, by the way), I could hear nothing but birds and the distant sound of waves crashing below.

You’re about a 45-minute drive from Ponta Delgada, but that distance works in your favor here. The isolation means you get authentic Azorean village life — I watched locals tend their gardens and heard roosters in the morning, which sounds cheesy but actually felt pretty magical.

My room faced the ocean, and I spent way too much time just standing at the window watching the light change throughout the day. The beds here are genuinely comfortable — not just hotel-marketing comfortable, but the kind where you actually sleep through the night and wake up refreshed. I’m usually a light sleeper, especially in new places, but something about the combination of sea air and those incredibly soft linens just worked. The rooms have this clean, modern feel without being sterile, and there are thoughtful touches like local ceramics and artwork that remind you where you are.

The restaurant focuses on local ingredients, which in the Azores means incredibly fresh fish and produce you’ve probably never heard of. I had lapas (local limpets) for the first time here, and while I was skeptical, they were actually delicious — sort of like the ocean concentrated into one bite. Breakfast features local cheeses and that amazing Azorean bread, plus fresh fruit that tastes like it was picked that morning (because it probably was). The staff genuinely seems to enjoy talking about the food and the island, which makes meals feel more like conversations with locals than typical hotel service.
