Wairakei Resort Taupo

HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what caught me off guard about Wairakei Resort? It’s actually way more relaxed than I expected for a 4-star place. I mean, when you pull up that long drive off Wairakei Drive – and honestly, GPS can be a bit wonky finding the exact entrance – you’re greeted by this sprawling property that feels more like a country retreat than your typical hotel. The geothermal steam rising in the distance immediately reminds you where you are, and there’s this earthy, mineral smell in the air that’s pure Taupo.
The rooms are comfortable enough, though I’ll be honest, some feel a bit dated (the carpeting especially), but here’s the thing – you’re not really here to hang out in your room anyway. What makes this place special is how it sits right in the heart of geothermal country. You can literally walk to the Craters of the Moon thermal area, which most tourists don’t realize is basically next door. The resort’s own geothermal pool is pretty decent – not fancy, but the water’s naturally heated and perfect after a day of exploring. I actually prefer it in the evenings when it’s quieter and you can hear the bubbling mud pools nearby. The restaurant’s nothing to write home about, but the staff genuinely seem to know the area well. Our server gave us directions to this little café in Wairakei village that we never would’ve found otherwise.
Here’s what I really appreciated – parking’s easy (a huge plus when you’re lugging hiking gear), and they’re used to guests coming and going at odd hours for sunrise lake visits or late dinners in town. It’s about a 10-minute drive to central Taupo, which means you avoid the tourist crowds but can still hit up the lakefront restaurants. The 7.3 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow you away, but it does exactly what it promises. Perfect if you want to explore the geothermal wonders without paying resort prices, and honestly, waking up to those misty views over the thermal valley is worth the slightly worn edges. Just bring a jacket – even in summer, those geothermal winds can be chilly in the mornings.
