The Trotting Mare Caravan Park – Adults Only
First Impressions
Honestly, when I first pulled into The Trotting Mare Caravan Park – Adults Only, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a caravan park in rural Wales. But this four-star spot near Overton on Dee completely changed my perspective on what a caravan holiday could be. The setting is genuinely peaceful — you’re surrounded by rolling Welsh countryside with the River Dee meandering nearby, and there’s this immediate sense of stepping away from everything. The fact that it’s adults-only means the atmosphere stays wonderfully calm throughout your stay.
Location and Setting
The location really is something special, and I can see why couples rate it so highly. You’re positioned right on the edge of Overton on Dee, which gives you that proper countryside feel without being completely isolated. The village itself is charming — there’s a decent pub within walking distance, and you know what, the local walks along the river are absolutely lovely. Free parking is available right on site, which takes away any stress about leaving your car. What struck me most was how quiet it gets in the evenings — just the sound of the river and maybe some sheep in the distance.
The Accommodation Experience
The caravans themselves are well-maintained and surprisingly spacious. Each unit comes with a proper kitchen setup, so you can actually cook decent meals if you want to stay in for the evening. The furnishings feel fresh and clean, not that tired caravan park aesthetic you might worry about. I mean, you’re not getting hotel-style service here, but everything works as it should, and there’s something quite satisfying about having your own little space in such beautiful surroundings. The views from most pitches look out over fields and trees — it’s the kind of scenery that makes you want to sit outside with a cup of tea.
Activities and Surroundings
This isn’t the sort of place where you’ll find organized entertainment or a swimming pool, and that’s actually the whole point. The appeal here is the access to proper Welsh countryside and the chance to properly unwind. The River Dee is perfect for gentle walks, and if you’re into fishing, there are some excellent spots nearby. Wrexham is close enough for a day trip if you need shops or more dining options, but honestly, most people come here to escape all that. The walking trails around Overton are well-marked, and you’ll often have them mostly to yourself.
Why Guests Love It
What really works about The Trotting Mare is how it delivers exactly what it promises — a peaceful, adults-only retreat in beautiful Welsh countryside. The 9.6 rating speaks for itself, but it’s those little touches that matter: the genuinely friendly welcome, the immaculate facilities, and that sense of space and tranquility you just can’t get in busier holiday spots. Couples particularly seem to appreciate the romantic potential of the setting — there’s something quite special about having breakfast outside your caravan while looking out over the Dee valley. It’s not flashy or complicated, just a really well-run place in a gorgeous location.

What a devine holiday let. We stayed in the Ascot for two nights, and it served our purpose perfectly as a base to explore North Wales. Quiet, peaceful, and with everything you could want for a home from home. There was a welcoming basket of some essentials. Bread, jam, butter, milk, and chocolate biscuits. A very nice pub restaurant is next...

I particularly liked the comfortable reclining sofas , large flat screen TV and the large bath and shower. The bed was very comfortable if firm but that's my preference.
