Poggio all’Agnello Sport & Active Holidays is honestly one of those places that catches you off guard in the best way possible. This 4-star gem sits perfectly positioned in Barberino Tavarnelle, and I mean perfectly – you’re nestled in the Tuscan hills but still close enough to civilization that you won’t feel completely cut off from the world. The property has this wonderful sprawling feel to it, with stone buildings that look like they’ve been there forever (in that charming Italian way) and grounds that just invite you to wander around with a glass of wine in hand.

What really struck me about this place is how they’ve nailed the whole “active holidays” concept without making it feel forced or overwhelming. You know what I mean? The facilities are genuinely impressive – there’s a gorgeous pool area where you can actually swim laps if you’re feeling energetic, or just float around lazily while taking in those rolling hill views. The spa area is beautifully done too, with a sauna that’s perfect after a day of hiking or cycling through the countryside. Speaking of which, they’ve got bike rentals and can point you toward some incredible trails that most tourists never find. I spent a morning cycling through olive groves and vineyards, and honestly, it was magical.

The rooms here are what I’d call “rustic comfort done right” – think exposed beams, terracotta floors, and windows that frame the landscape like paintings, but with all the modern amenities you actually need (yes, the WiFi works, and yes, the air conditioning is a blessing during summer). The hotel restaurant serves some seriously good local food – I’m talking about pasta that’s made fresh daily and wine from vineyards you can literally see from your window. Parking is easy and free, which is such a relief when you’re exploring this part of Tuscany by car. The staff strikes that perfect balance of being helpful without hovering, and they genuinely seem to love sharing local recommendations (ask them about the Saturday market in nearby Greve – it’s worth the drive). The only minor downside is that some of the rooms can get a bit warm in the late afternoon during peak summer, but honestly, that’s what the pool is for. Mornings here are absolutely divine – there’s this peaceful quiet broken only by birdsong, and the light hitting the hills is something you’ll want to wake up early for at least once during your stay.
