You know what hit me first about Six Senses Kaplankaya? The smell of wild herbs mixed with sea salt as you wind down that final stretch to Akbük. I mean, most people rushing to Bodrum’s party scene completely miss this little pocket of coastline, but honestly – that’s exactly why this place works so well.
The resort sits on this dramatic headland where the Aegean gets properly wild, and when I say wild, I’m talking about coastline that hasn’t been completely tamed by concrete and beach clubs. The architecture here actually respects the landscape instead of fighting it – these stone and timber villas seem to grow right out of the hillside. You’ll find yourself walking these winding paths between accommodation blocks, and honestly, it never feels repetitive because each villa catches the light differently depending on the time of day. The spa is something else entirely – they’ve built it into the natural rock formations, so you’re getting treatments while listening to waves crash below. It’s sort of theatrical, but in a good way.
What really sets this place apart from the usual Turkish Riviera suspects is how they’ve managed to feel luxurious without being flashy about it. The beach club down at sea level (you’ll take a buggy or walk the zigzag path) has this relaxed vibe where you can actually hear yourself think. No thumping music, no crowds fighting for loungers – just this beautiful crescent of pebble beach where the water stays clear even when it’s choppy. The main pool area up top catches these incredible sunsets, and you’ll want to grab a spot on the western terrace around 7 PM – trust me on this one. Food’s genuinely good too, which isn’t always a given at resort restaurants. They’re doing this farm-to-table thing with ingredients from their own gardens, plus really fresh seafood from local boats in Akbük harbor.
Now, a few practical things – the road getting here is winding and can be a bit nerve-wracking if you’re not used to Turkish mountain driving, but the resort arranges transfers from Bodrum airport that are worth every lira. Cell service can be spotty in some of the lower villas (honestly, some people see this as a feature). And while the 8.9 rating is well-deserved, you’re paying serious money for the privilege – this isn’t a place for budget-conscious travelers. But if you’re looking to properly disconnect on Turkey’s coast without sacrificing comfort, and you want to skip the scene-y spots that everyone else hits, Kaplankaya delivers something genuinely special. Just don’t expect bustling nightlife – the closest real town is a 20-minute drive, and that’s exactly the point.
