Salmakis Resort & Spa

Look, I’ll be straight with you about Salmakis Resort & Spa – it’s one of those places that gets a lot right but isn’t quite perfect, which honestly makes it more interesting than some of the cookie-cutter five-stars around Bodrum. The location in Bardakci Bay is actually brilliant if you know the area. You’re tucked away from the main Bodrum madness (thank god, because the harbor area gets absolutely mental in July and August), but you can still walk to decent restaurants without needing a taxi every time you want proper Turkish food instead of hotel buffet fare.

The resort itself has this sort of understated elegance thing going on – not flashy like some of the newer places, but you can tell they’ve put thought into the details. The spa is genuinely good, not just a couple of massage rooms with fancy lighting. I mean, the hammam experience alone is worth it, especially if you’ve never done the full Turkish bath thing properly. The pools are where they really shine though – there’s this infinity setup that looks out over the bay, and honestly, around sunset with a proper Turkish coffee or maybe something stronger, it’s pretty spectacular. The beach access is decent too, though the pebbles can be a bit rough on your feet – definitely bring water shoes if you’re planning to do much swimming.

Here’s the thing though – and this is probably why it sits at a 7.4 instead of pushing into the nines – the service can be a bit hit or miss. Sometimes you’ll get staff who clearly know what they’re doing and make everything seamless, other times you’re waiting twenty minutes for someone to bring you a towel. It’s not terrible, just inconsistent in that way that can be frustrating when you’re paying five-star prices. The food is actually pretty solid, better than I expected from a resort kitchen. They do a good job with both the international stuff and local dishes, though if you want the really authentic Turkish experience, you’ll want to venture into Bodrum proper at least once or twice. The whole place gets quite busy during peak season – we’re talking Russian and European families everywhere in summer – but if you can swing it in shoulder season, it’s much more relaxed and you’ll actually get to enjoy the facilities without fighting for a decent spot by the pool.
