Residence Chateau de Barbet
First Impressions
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Residence Chateau de Barbet, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect — but the moment you see this restored 18th-century château rising from the Gascon countryside, you know you’ve found something special. This four-star property sits on sprawling grounds in Lombez, about an hour southwest of Toulouse, and there’s something almost magical about how it emerges from the rolling hills. The free parking right on-site is actually a blessing here since you’re pretty much in the middle of beautiful nowhere, and you’ll want your car to explore the region anyway.
The Château Experience
What really struck me about this place is how they’ve managed to preserve the château’s original character while making it genuinely comfortable for modern travelers. Each apartment feels like you’re staying in a piece of history — I mean, the stone walls and period details are authentic, not some theme park version. The units come with proper kitchenettes, which is perfect because the nearest restaurant options are back in Lombez village (though honestly, that’s part of the charm). You know what I loved? The way morning light filters through those tall windows, especially if you snag one of the units facing the gardens.
Location and Surroundings
The location really is something special — recent guests rated it 8.8, and I can see why. You’re surrounded by the kind of French countryside that makes you want to slow down and actually breathe. Lombez itself is this sleepy little town with a beautiful cathedral, and the whole area feels wonderfully untouched by mass tourism. It’s the sort of place where couples come to reconnect (which explains why it’s so popular for romantic getaways), but honestly, anyone who appreciates peace and natural beauty will fall for it. The Pyrenees are visible on clear days, and there are walking trails that wind through the property and beyond.
Practical Comforts
What I appreciated most was how well-equipped everything is without feeling overly fussy. The apartments have everything you need for a self-catering stay, and the staff — well, they’re there when you need them but give you plenty of space to enjoy the tranquility. The grounds are impeccably maintained, and there’s something deeply satisfying about having morning coffee on your terrace while looking out over the château’s gardens. The Wi-Fi works fine (important for those of us who can’t completely disconnect), but you’ll probably find yourself using it less than usual.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the kind of place where you’ll find a bustling pool scene or evening entertainment — and that’s exactly the point. People come here to escape, to experience a slice of authentic French château life, and to enjoy some of the most peaceful countryside in southwestern France. The 8.6 guest rating reflects what I experienced: a property that delivers on its promise of tranquil elegance. If you’re looking for a base to explore the Gers region or simply want to hole up somewhere beautiful with someone special, Residence Chateau de Barbet hits that sweet spot between historical charm and modern comfort.

We had a lovely time at Chateau de Barbet. We were obviously staying out of season but still really enjoyed our time The house was well equipped and just what we needed. My daughter really enjoyed the trampoline that was in the garden of the house we were allocated. The pool was really warm although also very deep! Staff were friendly and helpful...

A lovely, well looked after property. We really didn’t want to come home! It was 99% home from home. Nearly everything that we needed was there and was so grateful for the air con, esp our dog! Very peaceful in a beautiful setting.
All the facilities available were amazing and of a high standard! Thank you for being so wonderful Annie and John!
