Regal Palms Resort

350 Fenton Street, 3010 Rotorua, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Regal Palms Resort on Fenton Street, I wasn’t expecting much. I mean, you drive past so many generic hotels along that strip heading into central Rotorua, but this place actually caught me off guard in the best way. The moment you walk into the lobby, there’s this subtle sulfur smell that reminds you you’re in proper geothermal country, but it’s not overwhelming like some places closer to the lake can be.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to feel genuinely upscale without being stuffy about it. The rooms are spacious – and I mean actually spacious, not just “spacious for New Zealand” spacious. You know what I loved? The fact that they’ve got proper blackout curtains, which is clutch if you’re trying to recover from jet lag or just want to sleep in after a long day tramping around the Redwoods. The beds are honestly some of the most comfortable I’ve encountered, and the bathroom setup is smart – separate shower and a deep tub that’s perfect after you’ve been hiking around Wai-O-Tapu or doing the Skyline luge until your legs are jelly. Parking’s easy too, which sounds boring but trust me, when you’re driving around central Rotorua looking for a spot near the lakefront, you’ll appreciate having your own space sorted.
The location is actually pretty clever – you’re close enough to walk to most of the main attractions (the Polynesian Spa is maybe a 10-minute stroll), but far enough from the really touristy chaos that you can actually relax. I spent a good chunk of time just hanging around their pool area, which has this nice view toward the lake if you know where to look. The staff genuinely seem to know the area well – not just the obvious tourist stuff, but like, which thermal pools are worth the drive out of town and where to grab decent coffee that isn’t completely overpriced. One thing that impressed me was how they handle the breakfast situation; it’s not just the usual continental spread, but they’ve got some local touches that feel authentic rather than forced. The whole place runs smoothly too – check-in was quick, housekeeping was on point, and I never felt like I was dealing with that rushed hotel vibe you get at some places during peak season. With that 8.8 rating, I’d say they’ve earned it honestly. It’s the kind of place where you can base yourself for exploring Rotorua properly without feeling like you’re roughing it or blowing your entire budget on accommodation.

The property had some excellent options for the kids to be entertained. They roamed around and had a great time for the week. What could be improved: The doors are really sticky and hard to open. It would’ve been a 10/10 if they offered some sort of breakfast service even if it was just cereal, toast and spreads + tea and coffee which you can...
