Punga Cove Resort

HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what hits you first at Punga Cove? The silence. I mean, you step off the water taxi at Endeavour Inlet and it’s like someone turned the volume down on the world. This place sits tucked into Queen Charlotte Sound in a way that feels almost accidental – like someone just happened to find the perfect little cove and decided to build a resort there.
The thing about Punga Cove is that it’s properly remote (you can only get there by boat or helicopter, which honestly adds to the whole experience), but they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between wilderness adventure and actual comfort. The accommodation ranges from these cute little chalets scattered through the bush to proper hotel rooms, and I’ve got to say, even the basic rooms have those floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the sound perfectly. Actually, the whole place feels designed around the view – which makes sense because that water is genuinely stunning, especially when the morning mist lifts off it around 8am. The restaurant overlooks everything too, and while the menu isn’t huge, they do this green-lipped mussel dish that’s probably the best I’ve had in the Sounds. Fair warning though – dinner service can be a bit slow when they’re busy, but honestly, where are you rushing to?
What really works here is how they’ve embraced the whole Marlborough Sounds vibe without trying too hard. There’s kayaks you can take out (the inlet is perfect for beginners since it’s so sheltered), and they’ve got these walking tracks that connect to the Queen Charlotte Track if you’re feeling ambitious. The staff actually know the area – like, properly know it – so when they suggest the evening walk to the lookout, trust them on the timing because the sunset views are ridiculous. The spa treatments are decent too, though I’d skip the expensive packages and just go for a basic massage after a day of hiking. One thing to note: it gets pretty quiet in winter (May through August), which could be perfect or slightly eerie depending on what you’re after. Summer bookings fill up fast though, especially with the Wellington crowd who seem to have discovered this place. Overall, it’s one of those spots that delivers on the whole “escape from everything” promise without making you sleep in a tent – and in the Sounds, that’s actually harder to find than you’d think.
