Portland Tourist Park
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from Portland Tourist Park when I first pulled up on Garden Street – the name made it sound like one of those generic roadside stops. But you know what? This place actually surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked into this quiet residential stretch that feels properly Australian suburban, with those wide streets and established gardens that make you slow down whether you want to or not. The 8.9 rating suddenly made sense when I walked through the front door and was greeted by staff who clearly gave a damn about what they were doing.
What really got me was how the place manages to feel both relaxed and well-run at the same time. I mean, it’s a 3-star property so you’re not getting marble bathrooms or turn-down service, but everything just… works. The rooms are clean without that harsh chemical smell some places have, and whoever designed them actually thought about where you’d want to plug in your phone charger (thank god). The beds are properly comfortable – not too soft, not like sleeping on concrete – and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a jet engine when it kicks in. Small things, but they add up when you’re actually trying to sleep.
Portland itself is sort of this hidden gem along the Great Ocean Road that most people blast right through on their way to the Grampians or Port Fairy, which is honestly their loss. You’re a five-minute walk from the harbor where the fishing boats come in early morning – if you’re up around sunrise, the light hitting the water is pretty spectacular. There’s this little bakery on Percy Street (just around the corner) that does meat pies that’ll ruin you for servo food forever, and the locals at the pub actually talk to visitors instead of just tolerating them. The tourist park sits right where you can walk to everything worth seeing but still get a proper night’s sleep – no late-night foot traffic or drunk backpackers stumbling around at 2am like you get in some places. Check-in was straightforward, parking’s easy (and free, which isn’t a given these days), and they’ve got that rare combination of being helpful without being pushy. It’s the kind of place that makes you think about extending your stay by a night, just because.
