Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary on Gan Gan Road, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – I mean, the name suggests it’s all about the koalas, but it’s actually a really solid place to stay. The property sits in One Mile (which, let’s be real, is basically the quieter cousin of Nelson Bay), and you’re far enough from the main tourist chaos but still close enough that you can hear the water when the wind’s right.
What struck me immediately was how the staff actually seemed to know their stuff about the local area. Check-in was smooth, and the woman at the front desk mentioned that the best time to spot dolphins from nearby Shoal Bay is around 7 AM – turns out she was absolutely right. The rooms are comfortable in that unpretentious way that four-star places should be, though I will say the walls could be a touch thicker. You’ll hear your neighbors if they’re early risers, but it’s nothing that ruins the experience. The beds are genuinely good though, and there’s enough space to spread out your beach gear without tripping over everything. Parking’s easy too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling coolers and umbrellas back and forth.
You know what really sets this place apart? It’s the location knowledge they share. The staff pointed me toward Little Beach instead of the packed main stretch at Shoal Bay, and I had practically the whole place to myself on a Tuesday morning. They also mentioned that the Tomaree Head walk is brutal in summer heat (thank god for that heads up), and suggested the early evening instead. These are the kinds of insider tips that actually make a difference. The sanctuary part is charming without being touristy – you’ll see some native wildlife around the grounds, especially in the early morning, but it’s not like a zoo situation. More like… well, you’re just staying somewhere that happens to respect the local ecosystem. The whole property has this relaxed vibe that matches the Port Stephens pace perfectly. I mean, this isn’t the Gold Coast – people come here to actually unwind, and the hotel gets that. Whether you’re planning to hit up the sand dunes at Stockton Beach or just want a decent base for exploring the bay area, it works. That 9.4 rating makes sense once you’ve been there – it’s not flashy, but everything just works the way it should.

Beautiful nature setting, wonderful Glamping experience.

We stayed overnight in a glamping tent. The staff at reception and the kiosk were so friendly and the welcome hamper was amazing! It was quiet, the rooms are clean and relaxing but the location is close enough to everything if you want to explore by car. And if that was not enough, they rescue Koala's.... they are amazing humans. Highly recommend!!

It’s amazingly located, very quiet and the staff is outstanding. The bungalows are perfectly equipped, modern with easy and comfortable access. Our highest appreciation for their commitment and passion to take care about these wonderful animals.

Room service said they did our room when they didn't but reception staff was amazing and gave us fresh towels and our breakfast for the next day.

The staff was so kind and informative. The koalas are adorable. The work the sanctuary does is amazing and the presentations are terrific. The design of the whole sanctuary is inspiring and thoughtful. I would definitely stay in one of the many glamping tents. They are way more charming and centrally located than the motel-like apartments which...
