Beachcombers

First Impressions

Honestly, Beachcombers caught me off guard in the best possible way. You know how some places just feel right the moment you arrive? This four-star spot perched above Watergate Bay has that magic — it’s like someone took the classic British seaside hotel concept and gave it a proper modern makeover without losing its soul. The building itself sits perfectly positioned on the clifftop, and I mean perfectly — you can literally hear the waves from the moment you step out of your car.

Location & Setting

The location here is honestly unbeatable, and I’m not just saying that because recent guests rated it a perfect 10. Watergate Bay stretches out below like something from a postcard, but better because it’s real and you’re actually there. What I love about this stretch of Cornwall is how it manages to feel both dramatic and peaceful — you’ve got surfers catching waves during the day, but come evening, it’s just you and that incredible coastline. The South West Coast Path runs right past the hotel, so if you’re into walking (and you should be), you can explore miles of stunning clifftop scenery without getting in the car.

The Rooms

My room faced the sea, which — let’s be honest — is the only way to do it here. The decor strikes that tricky balance between coastal charm and contemporary comfort, with soft blues and whites that complement rather than compete with the view outside. The beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about this), and there’s something wonderful about falling asleep to the sound of waves. What really impressed me was the attention to detail — proper blackout curtains for when you want to sleep in, but also the kind of windows that frame the coastline like artwork when you’re awake.

Dining & Atmosphere

The restaurant takes full advantage of those sea views, and the menu focuses on local Cornish produce in a way that feels natural rather than forced. I had some of the best fish I’ve tasted in ages — clearly caught locally and prepared by people who actually know what they’re doing. The atmosphere shifts beautifully throughout the day too; it’s relaxed and family-friendly during lunch, then becomes more intimate as the sun sets over the bay. There’s also a lovely terrace where you can grab drinks and watch the surfers below, which honestly became my favorite spot for morning coffee.

Why Guests Love It

What makes Beachcombers special isn’t just one thing — it’s how everything comes together. Couples particularly seem to fall for this place (and I can see why), but it works equally well if you’re here to surf, walk, or simply decompress from city life. The staff genuinely care about making your stay memorable, and there’s ample parking which might sound mundane but trust me, it matters when you’re exploring Cornwall. You’re also perfectly positioned to explore both the rugged north coast and the gentler south — though honestly, you might find yourself so content here that day trips become optional rather than essential.

Each resort village provides a unique blend of privacy and community, where guests enjoy villa-style accommodations while having access to shared amenities and social experiences.
