Pestana Quinta do Arco Nature & Rose Garden Hotel
First Impressions
The Pestana Quinta do Arco Nature & Rose Garden Hotel sits tucked away in the hills of Arco de São Jorge, and honestly, the name tells you everything you need to know. This four-star property feels more like a botanical retreat than a traditional hotel — you’re surrounded by terraced gardens that cascade down the hillside, with roses blooming practically everywhere you look. The moment you arrive, there’s this immediate sense of calm that washes over you, partly because you’re away from any tourist crowds and partly because the Atlantic stretches endlessly in front of you.
The Setting
What really sets this place apart is how it’s built into Madeira’s natural landscape rather than fighting against it. The hotel follows the island’s traditional quinta (estate) style, with low-rise buildings that blend seamlessly into the terraced gardens. You know what struck me most? The way they’ve preserved the original levada (irrigation channel) that runs through the property — it’s this gentle water feature that adds to the whole peaceful vibe. The location gets serious praise from guests, especially couples who rate it 8.7, and I can see why. You’re perched on a cliff with unobstructed ocean views, but still close enough to explore the island’s hiking trails and coastal villages.
Accommodations
Each room here feels like it has its own personality, mainly because they’re spread across different buildings throughout the gardens. Most come with private balconies or terraces — and trust me, you’ll want that outdoor space for morning coffee with those views. The interiors lean toward classic Portuguese style with modern touches, nothing too flashy but comfortable and well-maintained. What I appreciated was the attention to soundproofing; despite being a nature-focused property, you won’t be kept awake by every bird at dawn (though honestly, the birdsong here is pretty pleasant).
Dining and Amenities
The continental breakfast gets served in a bright dining room that opens onto the gardens, and it’s actually quite generous — fresh local fruits, regional cheeses, and proper coffee that doesn’t taste like it came from a machine. The main restaurant focuses on Madeiran specialties, though they keep the menu accessible for international tastes. There’s also a spa tucked into the gardens if you want to lean fully into the relaxation theme, and they offer treatments using local botanicals. The fact that there’s free private parking on-site is a real bonus if you’re planning to explore the island by car.
Why Guests Love It
This isn’t the kind of place where you’ll find a bustling pool scene or evening entertainment — and that’s exactly the point. People come here to disconnect, to wander through rose gardens at sunset, and to fall asleep to the sound of waves far below. The staff seems to understand this too; they’re helpful without being intrusive, letting you enjoy the natural setting at your own pace. If you’re looking for a peaceful base to explore Madeira’s levada walks and coastal drives, or if you just want to spend a few days surrounded by flowers and ocean views, this quinta delivers exactly what it promises.

A lovely setting in the northern part of Madeira. The garden is beautiful and wel-kept. The bungalow was tidy and comfortable. And the people very friendly. We had a packed breakfast which was very good.

Great hotel with a large very well-taken-care-of territory, charming houses, very quiet. We enjoyed walk to the Rosarium even it wasn't the season for roses. We liked everything about our stay and wish we had more time to use the pool, stay on the terrace etc. As it was chilly in the evening, we were happy to see a small fireplace in the house and...

The Tropical Garden, the pools and the surrounding was outstanding. From the First Minute we loved it! We had two apartments next to each other which was great for a family. Both were clean and new and we liked them. Small kitchenette- enough for us but if you want to cook real meals things might be missing.
