Peppers Bluewater Resort

State Highway 8, 7945 Lake Tekapo, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Peppers Bluewater Resort – you know how these highway hotels can be, especially when you’re driving that long stretch on State Highway 8. But the moment you turn into the property, Lake Tekapo just spreads out in front of you like someone pulled back a curtain. The resort sits right on the shoreline, and I mean right on it – you can literally hear the water lapping against the rocks from most of the rooms.
What actually impressed me wasn’t the fancy lobby (though it’s nice enough), but how they’ve managed to make a 4.5-star place feel… well, not stuffy. The staff knows their stuff about the area – they’ll tell you the best spots for stargazing without the crowds, or when the Church of the Good Shepherd gets too packed with tour buses. Speaking of stargazing, this is probably one of the few hotels where you can see the Milky Way clearly right from your balcony. The light pollution is practically non-existent once you get away from the main township area, and honestly, that alone makes it worth staying here instead of in town.
The rooms are solid – nothing groundbreaking, but they’ve got those floor-to-ceiling windows that make you feel like you’re camping, except with proper heating and a decent shower. I stayed in November, which is shoulder season, so it wasn’t crazy busy, but I imagine summer gets pretty hectic. The restaurant overlooks the lake, and while it’s not cheap (nothing in Tekapo really is), the salmon is actually local and the wine list has some decent Central Otago options. Pro tip: if you’re driving the tourist loop, this makes a perfect base for day trips to Mount Cook or even Queenstown if you don’t mind a longer drive. The parking is free and plentiful, which – trust me – you’ll appreciate after dealing with some of the other resort towns around here. The only downside? The wifi can be spotty, but honestly, you’re here for the scenery, not your Instagram feed.

Perfect location just a minute walk from the restaurants. Grounds are beautiful with a duck pond. Room was very warm and heating in the bathroom too was great considering we visited during -2 temperatures. What could be improved: The room was tiny. We got the budget room however the budget room was still one of our most expensive hotel rooms of...

Angela from New Zealand (6 June 2025)
It was so toasty and warm when we arrived. Everything we needed including full kitchen.
What could be improved: A tint on the sliding door would be good as we felt
Like everyone looked in when they walked past.

Good location, friendly service, clean room , comfortable bed
What could be improved: We ended up in a 2 story unit , probably should have been warned at check in … it wasn’t really suitable for us … breakfast was $41 pp … a bit expensive, that’s why we didn’t go
Geraldine from Singapore (5 June 2025)
Lake view
What could be improved: The 3rd bedroom on ground (non-lake view facing) feels claustrophobic due to small window opening only.
Recinos from United States (25 May 2025)
Room is a bit small, but the hotel is forthcoming with that information. Location is great and staff are friendly! The restroom was a good size aswell. What could be improved: Most of the apartment was very clean! The shower in room 406a needs attention. There is some mold growth in the grout. As well as ceiling of the shower needed a bit of...

I liked the surprise cheese platter in the fridge and birthday greeting.
What could be improved: there was no warm slippers to use in the bathroom coz its getting so cold. they did not take note of my request for Twin bed for me and my friend so she slept in the sofa instead.
