Nightingale
You know what’s funny about the Nightingale? I drove past it three times before realizing this unassuming building on Broadway Lane was actually my hotel. It’s tucked into South Cerney in this wonderfully understated way – no flashy signage or grand entrance, just this converted period building that honestly looks more like a stylish private residence than a hotel. Which, I suppose, is exactly the point.
The whole place has this lived-in elegance that’s hard to fake. The owners clearly spent time getting the details right – I mean, the bathroom fixtures alone probably cost more than my monthly rent, but they’ve avoided that sterile boutique hotel feeling you get sometimes. My room had these gorgeous original windows that actually opened (thank god), thick stone walls that kept everything wonderfully quiet, and what I can only describe as the most comfortable bed I’ve encountered in years. The heating system’s a bit quirky – takes a while to warm up in the mornings – but honestly, that just adds to the character. There’s proper parking round the back, which is clutch because finding a spot in the village center can be a nightmare, especially during summer when the Cotswold Water Park gets busy.
What really sets the Nightingale apart is how it sits in South Cerney itself. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the village center, where there’s this excellent pub (The Old George) that does proper Sunday roasts, and you can actually walk to the water park if you’re into that sort of thing. The staff seem to genuinely live in the area – they’ll tell you about the footpath that cuts through to Ashton Keynes, or warn you that the village shop closes early on Wednesdays. It’s that kind of local knowledge you can’t manufacture. Check-in was refreshingly human too – no corporate script, just a genuine conversation about where I was headed and whether I needed restaurant recommendations. The whole experience feels more like staying with friends who happen to have impeccable taste than a traditional hotel stay. Sure, it’s pricier than your average Premier Inn, but you’re paying for something genuinely special here – a place that understands the difference between luxury and showing off.

Excellent location within the holiday park, only a short walk from the clubhouse. Loads to do on site with kids. The caravan was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Lovely warm showers. Great outdoor decking for al fresco dining. BBQ provided. Easy parking and straightforward check-in, clear instructions and directions.
