Millicent Hillview Caravan Park
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Millicent Hillview Caravan Park on Dalton Street, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s a caravan park, right? But you know what actually surprised me? This place has got character, and more importantly, it’s run by people who genuinely seem to care about making your stay comfortable.
The thing about Millicent is that it’s one of those South Australian towns that doesn’t try too hard – it just gets on with being a solid stopping point between Adelaide and the Grampians, or if you’re heading down to Mount Gambier. What I really appreciated about this park is how well they’ve utilized the natural slope of the land (hence the “Hillview,” I suppose). The powered sites toward the back actually give you decent views over the town, and on clear mornings you can see pretty far across the farmland. The amenities block is cleaner than you’d expect – I mean, it’s not fancy, but someone’s clearly taking pride in maintaining it. Hot showers, good water pressure, and they’ve even got a decent laundry setup that doesn’t eat your coins.
Here’s what actually sold me on the place though – the owners know their stuff about the local area. When I mentioned I was thinking about checking out the Tantanoola Caves, they not only gave me proper directions (GPS gets a bit wonky out there) but also suggested hitting up the Beachport jetty on the way back if I had time. And they were right – that detour ended up being the highlight of my trip. The park itself gets busy during school holidays, especially with families heading to the coast, but outside those times it’s pretty peaceful. You’ll hear the occasional truck on the highway, but it’s not too intrusive. Check-in was straightforward, no drama with arriving a bit later than planned, and they’ve got a little camp kitchen that’s actually well-equipped if you can’t be bothered firing up your own gear. The wifi reaches most of the park, which honestly surprised me for a 3-star place in regional SA. I stayed three nights and found myself genuinely relaxed by the end – sometimes that’s all you need from a caravan park, isn’t it? Just somewhere clean, friendly, and unpretentious where you can reset before hitting the road again.
