HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Lonquimay Lodge on that dusty Camino El Naranjo road, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s about 2 kilometers out from the main town, and you know what? That turned out to be exactly what made it special. The place sits in this gorgeous spot where you can actually hear the wind through the araucaria trees instead of traffic, and on clear mornings – which honestly happen more often than you’d think in this part of Chile – the view of the surrounding Andes is just ridiculous.

The lodge itself has this authentic mountain feel without trying too hard, if that makes sense. No fancy star rating or corporate polish, just solid timber construction and rooms that actually feel like someone thought about what travelers need. The owner clearly gets that people come to Lonquimay for the national reserve and skiing at Corralco, so everything’s set up with that outdoor mindset. I mean, there’s proper space to dry your gear, the heating actually works (crucial when you’re this close to the mountains), and the common areas have that lived-in comfort where you can spread out maps and plan your next day without feeling like you’re messing up some pristine lobby. What really struck me was how quiet it gets at night – you’re far enough from the main drag that you don’t get any road noise, just the occasional truck heading toward the Argentine border.

The staff knows the area inside and out, which honestly makes a huge difference when you’re trying to figure out trail conditions or whether the thermal springs at Tolhuaca are worth the drive (they are, by the way, especially if you go midweek). Parking’s easy – just pull right up, no drama – and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. I stayed in late spring when things were starting to green up, and the whole property had this energy of a place waking up for the busy summer season. The 8.8 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be some luxury resort, but it absolutely nails what it is: a genuine base camp for exploring one of Chile’s most underrated regions. If you’re the type who’d rather have a real conversation about hiking routes than turndown service, and you want to wake up somewhere that feels connected to the landscape instead of isolated from it, this is your spot.

Location, staff friendliness. The quality of the food was great. Breakfast was abundant and made up with quality locally sourced ingredients.

What could be improved: The room was just above a central hating or refrigerator external motor that I could hear all night. When staying in places like this the least one expects is noise.
