Lakes Retreat

HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what’s funny about Lakes Retreat? The name had me expecting some generic lakeside lodge, but when I actually pulled up to Porthaverigg Holiday Homes in Millom, I realized this place is something completely different – and honestly, way more interesting than I’d anticipated. It’s tucked away in this quiet corner of Cumbria that most people drive right past on their way to the more famous Lake District spots, which is actually part of its charm. The whole setup feels more like stumbling onto a well-kept local secret than booking a typical hotel.
The accommodation itself is part of these holiday homes that have been thoughtfully converted into boutique-style stays, and I mean thoughtfully – not the cookie-cutter renovation job you usually see. Each unit has its own personality, with proper attention paid to comfort without trying too hard to be Instagram-perfect. What really struck me was how quiet it gets here in the evenings; you’re close enough to the coast that you can actually hear the sea on calm nights, but far enough inland that you’re not dealing with the crowds that descend on places like Windermere during peak season. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward too – no circling around looking for spaces or paying ridiculous daily rates.
Here’s the thing about Millom that most visitors don’t realize until they’re here: it’s perfectly positioned for exploring the less touristy bits of Cumbria and the southern Lakes without the premium prices. From Lakes Retreat, you can be at some genuinely stunning coastal walks along the Duddon Estuary in minutes, or head up to Coniston or even Hawkshead for the day and come back to somewhere that feels like home base rather than just another hotel room. The 9.3 rating makes sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be everything to everyone, but what it does, it does really well. The owners clearly know the area inside and out, and they’re the type who’ll give you proper local recommendations rather than just pointing you toward the obvious tourist traps. I left feeling like I’d discovered something that most people haven’t caught onto yet, which in this age of everywhere being Instagrammed to death, is worth its weight in gold.

The place was lovey and clean and had everything we needed. The heating was very warm throughout, which was perfect for my mum, I was a bit worried as she is 87 and likes to be warm, but she said it was just right. We had a great time visiting family who live in the area. Millon is a nice little town with a few shops. There are some nice walks in...

We have stayed at Port Haverigg before but without a view of the water. Having a view of the water makes all the difference.
Mobile home was very comfortable. We were visiting relatives in Silecroft so we’re out a lot but they came back with us a couple of times and we’re impressed
