I almost drove right past it the first time – it’s tucked away in Port Haverigg Marina Village in this sort of unexpected way that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something special. And honestly, once you’re there, you get why they don’t bother with the whole star rating thing. It’s one of those places that just does its own thing really well.

The location is properly stunning – I mean, you’re literally looking out at the marina with all these boats bobbing around, and beyond that there’s this gorgeous lake view that changes completely depending on the light. Millom isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot (which is actually part of the charm), but being right on the marina means you’ve got this peaceful, almost nautical vibe that’s miles away from your typical hotel experience. The whole village has this quiet, end-of-the-world feel to it – you can hear the water lapping and the occasional seagull, but that’s about it. Perfect if you’re trying to properly switch off, though you’ll want a car since it’s not exactly walking distance to much else.

What really got me was the attention to detail inside. The rooms have this boutique feel without being pretentious about it – everything’s thoughtfully done, from the way they’ve positioned the windows to catch that water view to the little touches that show someone actually cares about the place. The staff clearly know their regulars (I overheard them chatting about someone’s usual breakfast order), and they’ve got that relaxed, friendly approach you get in places that aren’t trying to impress corporate guests. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no lengthy speeches about amenities, just genuine helpfulness when I asked about local walks. Speaking of which, if you’re into hiking, you’re perfectly positioned for the Cumbrian coast paths, and they actually have decent local knowledge rather than just pointing you toward generic tourist leaflets. The 9.1 rating makes complete sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be a fancy resort, but what it does, it does exceptionally well. Honestly, it’s the kind of place you’d book again without hesitation, especially if you want somewhere that feels more like a well-kept secret than a typical hotel stay.
