Lake Barra Cottages
Lake Barra Cottages Overview
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Lake Barra Cottages on Anderleigh Road – the address makes it sound more remote than it actually is, but that’s part of the charm. You’re tucked away in proper Queensland countryside near Gympie, far enough from the highway noise that the only sounds you’ll hear are kookaburras having their morning meetings and the occasional splash from the lake.
The cottages themselves have that relaxed, slightly weathered look that screams “we’re here for comfort, not Instagram.” Which, you know what, is exactly what you want after driving through endless sugarcane fields to get here. The owners clearly know their audience – these aren’t city slickers looking for marble countertops, but people who want to actually unwind. My cottage had this wonderful screened veranda where I spent most evenings with a beer, watching the water turn golden as the sun dropped behind the gum trees. The kitchen was basic but functional (though I’d bring a decent knife if you’re planning to cook much), and the beds were surprisingly comfortable. That 9.0 rating makes sense when you realize it’s not trying to be fancy – it’s just really good at what it does.
What really sold me on the place was how the staff actually seemed to give a damn. Check-in was refreshingly human – no corporate script, just genuine locals who knew exactly which cottage would be quietest (away from the boat ramp if you’re a light sleeper) and where to find the best meat pies in Downsfield. The lake itself is perfect for a morning paddle or just floating around doing absolutely nothing, which is sort of the whole point of being here. I mean, you’re not going to mistake this for a luxury resort, and the Wi-fi can be patchy when it rains, but if you’re looking for somewhere to properly disconnect from the world without completely roughing it, Lake Barra hits that sweet spot. Just pack some insect repellent – the mozzies around dusk are enthusiastic hosts.

Rustic and minimalistic, surrounded by animals. Definitely like staying on a farm. Beautiful scenery, the mango orchard is glorious to walk through.
What could be improved: Nothing.

It was exactly what we were looking for! Middle of nowhere, just the countryside and the sounds of the wildlife. The cow just wandering around was cool. And the pigs were super friendly!

The owner is so lovely and did anything to make the stay memorable. It was so peaceful and we loved the animals, the property was only 25min from Gympie and the view was so beautiful sitting on the deck, I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting some time out, it’s worth the stay. The cottage was so neat and tidy, the bed was so...

The peace and quiet was what we were looking for, strolling around the property and getting to pat the sheep, pigs, cows and goats was amazing. Sitting on the veranda watching the incredible sunset was perfect!

The accommodation was comfortable and good inside. It is good as a base to get to surrounding places like Noosa, Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach and Harvey Bay. It is also quiet with good views. What could be improved: Remote location not much to do. This accommodation is good if you have kids to see farm animals and wildlife (wallabies mainly). Even...
