When I first pulled up to Kona Village A Rosewood Resort, I honestly wasn’t prepared for how different it would feel from other Hawaiian resorts. This place sits on the same grounds where the original Kona Village Resort operated for decades before closing — and you can actually sense that history the moment you arrive. The design feels intentionally understated, with low-slung thatched-roof bungalows scattered across black lava rock and palm groves rather than towering hotel blocks.
The Setting
What struck me most was the location on Kahuwai Bay — it’s this protected cove that feels completely removed from the bustle of Kailua-Kona town, even though you’re only about 15 minutes north of all the shops and restaurants. The beach here is small but perfect, with calm waters that are ideal for snorkeling (I saw several green sea turtles just offshore). The resort actually preserved many of the original coconut palms and even some of the ancient Hawaiian fishponds, which gives the whole place this authentic, rooted-in-place feeling.
The Accommodations
My room was in one of their Polynesian-style hales, and I mean this in the best way — it felt more like staying in someone’s beautifully designed beach house than a typical resort room. The thatched roofing and natural materials keep things surprisingly cool, and every unit has this private lanai where you can actually hear the ocean. What I loved was how they managed to include modern amenities without making the space feel sanitized or generic.
Dining Experience
The main restaurant focuses heavily on local ingredients, and you can tell the chefs actually understand Hawaiian cuisine beyond the usual resort fare. I had some of the best poke I’ve tried on the Big Island, and they source their fish from local fishermen who bring their catch right to the bay. The whole dining setup feels relaxed — you’re often eating outdoors with your feet practically in the sand, which sounds cheesy but somehow works perfectly here.
Why Guests Love It
This unique boutique hotel really succeeds because it doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. There’s no massive pool complex or kids’ club — instead, you get this intimate experience that feels connected to the actual culture and environment of the Kona coast. The staff genuinely seems to know the area well, and they’re great at suggesting off-the-beaten-path spots for hiking or local food trucks you might otherwise miss. If you’re looking for Vegas-style entertainment, this isn’t your place, but if you want to actually experience Hawaii rather than just vacation in it, Kona Village delivers something pretty special.

Staff was amazing: Pu, Marlin, Justin, the Sushi chef, Angie the massage therapist, Skylar at spa reception- these folks made the experience so great and unforgettable.
And to the man in overnight housekeeping that killed the surprise cockroach in our room- you are a hero!
