Julie’s Den on Lyons Robin Hood

HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what struck me first about Julie’s Den on Lyons Robin Hood? The name itself – it’s delightfully quirky and honestly, that should’ve been my first clue that this place marches to its own beat. Tucked along Rhyl Coast Road in Meliden, it’s one of those boutique spots that completely sidesteps the whole star-rating game, and I actually respect that. The location is properly coastal – you’re literally a stone’s throw from the beach, and I mean that literally, not in that estate agent way. When you step outside, there’s that unmistakable sound of waves hitting the shore, mixed with the occasional seagull making a racket (fair warning if you’re a light sleeper, though honestly, I found it oddly soothing after the first night).
What makes Julie’s Den special is how it feels like someone’s genuinely passionate project rather than a corporate hotel venture. The decor has this eclectic, lived-in charm – think vintage Welsh touches mixed with modern comfort, but not in a forced way. Each room seems to have its own personality, which I suppose is what happens when you’re not following some chain hotel playbook. The attention to detail is impressive – proper thick towels, decent Wi-Fi (tested it thoroughly, naturally), and windows that actually open wide enough to let in that sea air. Parking’s straightforward too, which is a blessing since finding a spot along the coast road can be a nightmare during summer months. I visited in late spring, so it was busy enough to have a good atmosphere but not so packed that you’re fighting for space everywhere.
The real charm, though, is how it sits in the landscape. Meliden isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot – it’s more of a local secret between Prestatyn and Rhyl, and that works in your favor. You get proper coastal vibes without the crowds and inflated prices of the bigger resort towns. There’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard to impress anyone. The check-in was refreshingly personal – actual conversation rather than scripted pleasantries. I mean, it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea if you’re after a spa weekend or room service, but if you want somewhere with character that actually feels connected to its surroundings, Julie’s Den delivers. Plus, you’re well-positioned for exploring the North Wales coast properly – Denbigh Hills are a short drive inland if you fancy a change from beach walks, and the coastal path right outside is perfect for those early morning wanders before the day gets busy.
