Horseshoe Bay Resort
You know what surprised me most about Horseshoe Bay Resort? It’s actually tucked away in this gorgeous spot where you can’t see it from the main road through Bowen – you have to wind down Horseshoe Bay Road and suddenly there it is, right on this perfect little crescent of beach. I mean, Bowen’s got plenty of nice spots, but this particular stretch feels almost private, which is saying something for a 4-star place that gets pretty busy during mango season.
The resort itself has that relaxed North Queensland vibe without trying too hard – think modern comfort but not flashy. The rooms are honestly better than I expected for the price point, and here’s the thing that’ll matter if you’re staying in summer: the air conditioning actually works properly, and the rooms face away from the road so you’re not dealing with any truck noise from the highway. What really sold me though was stepping out onto the grounds in the morning – there’s this smell of frangipani mixed with salt air, and if you’re up early enough (around 6:30), you’ll catch the local fishing boats heading out past the headland. The pool area gets the morning sun but stays shaded in the afternoon, which locals will tell you is exactly what you want when it’s pushing 35 degrees.
Staff here seem to actually live in the area rather than being backpackers passing through, so they know things like where to get the best mud crab (hint: not the tourist trap on the main street) and which beaches are safe for swimming during stinger season. The restaurant’s decent – nothing revolutionary, but they do a proper barramundi and the coffee doesn’t taste like it’s been sitting around all day. Parking’s easy, check-in was smooth, and honestly the whole place just feels like someone who understands tropical living designed it. Sure, it’s not the fanciest resort you’ll find along this stretch of coast, but sometimes you want a place that feels more like a really nice beach house than a corporate hotel. Plus, you’re literally five minutes from town if you need supplies, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the backpacker crowd or cruise ship day-trippers wandering through your breakfast.

Location, close to beautiful bays, coastal walk and lookouts and food. Very clean, quiet and friendly. Loved the retro holiday vibe.

Not as much public transport or access to Bowen centre as there could be. Maybe a shuttle every so often?

Beautiful location and very clean. Having the cafe so close was definitely a bonus.

Unfortunately we were woken at 5:30am by music and noise from the cafe as were the cabins next to us.

Each unit was private, not facing another unit.

Close to a great little bay, good ‘swimming, snorkelling and exploring rocks’ spot
Prettily painted buildings in different colors help you locate you accommodation and car space

To really search for a complaint-bed a little springy for our liking.

Parking space for garden view cabins is on what would have been a footpath/nature strip before it was bitumened over. So virtually on the street. There were a few noisy Friday night hooning cars. Next time I'll book a sea view cabin for vehicle security and quiet.
