Gum Tree Caravan Park
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Gum Tree Caravan Park on Amble Lane, I wasn’t expecting much. The name sounds pretty basic, right? But you know what, sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you from the get-go. This little 3-star spot is actually one of those hidden gems that Port Fairy locals probably hope tourists don’t discover too quickly.
The thing about staying here is that you’re literally a stone’s throw from the heart of Port Fairy, but without all the tourist chaos that hits the main accommodation strips during peak season. I mean, you can walk to Griffiths Island in about ten minutes – and trust me, you’ll want to do that sunset walk at least once. The caravan park itself has this laid-back vibe that just works. Yeah, it’s not fancy, but the facilities are clean and well-maintained (which honestly matters more than marble countertops when you’re road tripping). The powered sites are decent sized, and there’s actually some mature gum trees scattered around that give you a bit of shade and privacy – hence the name, I guess. What really surprised me was how quiet it gets at night, considering you’re so close to town. The management seems to have a good handle on keeping things peaceful without being overly strict about it.
Here’s what I really appreciated though – the local knowledge. The folks running the place actually know Port Fairy, not just the standard tourist brochure stuff. They’ll tell you which fish and chips shop the locals actually go to (it’s not the one right on the wharf), and when to hit the Saturday morning market before it gets crazy. The shower blocks are dated but functional, and there’s enough hot water even when the park’s busy – I stayed during a long weekend and never had an issue. Parking’s straightforward, check-in was quick and friendly, and honestly, for the price point, you’re getting solid value. The 8.5 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be boutique accommodation, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any nasty surprises. If you’re exploring the Great Ocean Road and want a base that feels more like where actual Australians might stay rather than a tourist trap, this place hits the mark. Just don’t expect luxury – expect honest, no-fuss accommodation in a town that’s genuinely worth spending a few days exploring.

Quiet location a very short drive from centre of Port Fairy. Immaculately presented cabin with all new furnishings and linen. Warm welcome from friendly owner. Great amenity in this cabin inc stove top and the usual kitchen equipment. Very much a home away from home with extremely comfortable queen bed. Highly recommended.

We absolutely love Bimbi, we first stayed in 2007 and have now visited 3x , we would be here more often if it was closer. So peaceful, beautifully kept, fabulous atmosphere, cabins are just perfect and they have such an incredible choice of cabin to suit everyone’s requirements. The beautiful family that run Bimbi are wonderful, caring, kind and so...

Loved the flexibility and generosity of the hosts - we had a last minute delay (basically, it was taking us longer to get there than we thought it would) and although it was too late to modify the booking through booking.com, a quick call to the Caravan Park and they happily pushed our booking out a few days - for free! This was genuinely...
