Ellis Beach Oceanfront Holiday Park

Ellis Beach Oceanfront Holiday Park Overview
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Ellis Beach Oceanfront Holiday Park along Captain Cook Highway, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a “holiday park” – I mean, the name sounds a bit casual for a 4-star place, right? But you know what, sometimes the best spots are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you with fancy names. This place sits right on Ellis Beach, which is actually one of those stretches between Cairns and Port Douglas that most tourists just drive past without realizing what they’re missing.
The thing about Ellis Beach is it’s got this perfect sweet spot location – you’re literally 20 minutes south of Port Douglas (so you can easily hit up the Sunday markets or grab dinner at those waterfront restaurants), but you’re far enough away that you don’t deal with all the crowds and tour bus chaos. The beach here is honestly gorgeous, with these massive melaleuca trees that provide natural shade right behind the sand. I love that you can actually swim here year-round thanks to the stinger nets – something you definitely want to know about if you’re not familiar with Far North Queensland waters. The nets go up around October and stay through May, which covers you during stinger season.
What really impressed me about this place was how they’ve managed to feel both laid-back and polished at the same time. The cabins and sites are well-maintained (definitely earning that 4-star rating), but there’s none of that stuffy resort atmosphere where you feel like you can’t relax properly. Check-in was smooth, parking is never an issue – actually, one of the perks of staying somewhere that’s not right in the thick of Palm Cove or Port Douglas. The staff genuinely seem to know the area well, too. When I asked about the best time to visit the Daintree, they didn’t just hand me a brochure – they actually told me which tour operators they’d personally recommend and mentioned that early morning trips tend to be less crowded and better for wildlife spotting.
The location really shines when you realize you’re basically positioned perfectly for day trips. Kuranda’s about an hour inland, the Daintree is manageable for a day adventure, and if you want to do the Skyrail or scenic railway combo, you’re not dealing with that long drive from Port Douglas every morning. Plus, there’s something really nice about coming back to a quiet beach at the end of a busy sightseeing day rather than fighting for space at one of the more popular spots. Ellis Beach tends to empty out by late afternoon, so you often have this beautiful stretch of sand almost to yourself during sunset – which, by the way, you can see perfectly from here since the beach faces west. That 9.1 rating makes total sense when you add it all up.

great location - quiet setting. wonderful beachfront location
What could be improved: no face or hand towels; infrequent change out ( supposed to be every 4 days, but we were there 5 days & never had fresh towels. No linen changes. Rowdy on the weekend with no enforcement of “Quiet hours”
