Discovery Parks – Mornington Hobart
You know what struck me first about Discovery Parks Mornington? It’s actually got this unexpectedly peaceful vibe despite being right on Cambridge Road – and honestly, that’s saying something because Cambridge Road can get pretty busy during peak hours. But once you’re settled in, there’s this sort of insulated feeling that makes you forget you’re technically still in the suburbs.
The whole setup here is refreshingly unpretentious. I mean, it’s a 3-star place and they’re not trying to be anything they’re not, which I actually appreciate. The cabins are clean and functional – think IKEA meets Australian holiday park, but in a good way. What really works is how they’ve laid everything out. The sites are generously spaced (you’re not hearing your neighbor’s morning routine through paper-thin walls), and there’s decent tree cover that provides actual shade, not just token greenery. The amenities block is modern enough that you don’t feel like you’re roughing it, and honestly, the hot water pressure is better than some boutique places I’ve stayed at in the city.
Here’s the thing about the location that the booking sites don’t really capture – you’re perfectly positioned for both the Hobart experience and the peninsula adventures. Cambridge Road connects you straight into the city center in about 15 minutes when traffic’s cooperative, but you’re also literally minutes from some of the best coastal walks on this side of the Derwent. The Mornington shops are walking distance if you need supplies, and there’s this little bakery on Pottery Road (maybe a 5-minute drive) that does incredible vanilla slices – locals know about it, tourists usually don’t.
What I found genuinely useful was the camp kitchen setup. It’s spacious enough that you don’t feel like you’re fighting for bench space during the dinner rush, and they’ve actually thought about storage and prep areas. The barbecue facilities are well-maintained too, which matters more than you’d think. Check-in was straightforward – no unnecessary complications or hidden fees popping up. Parking is abundant, which is a relief if you’ve ever tried finding a spot in central Hobart during festival season.
The 8.2 rating makes sense to me. It’s not luxury, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. Families seem to love it here – I noticed kids actually playing outside instead of being glued to devices, probably because there’s enough space to run around safely. The management clearly keeps on top of maintenance issues, and the grounds have that well-cared-for feel without being overly manicured.
If you’re planning to explore Tasmania properly – I’m talking Museum of Old and New Art, Salamanca Markets, maybe day trips to Port Arthur or Mount Wellington – this place gives you a solid, affordable base without the city hotel prices. Just don’t expect resort-style service or Instagram-worthy interiors. What you get is honest accommodation that lets you focus on why you came to Tasmania in the first place.
Each resort village provides a unique blend of privacy and community, where guests enjoy villa-style accommodations while having access to shared amenities and social experiences.

It was at a short drive from airport and close to highway sp easier to get around. The cabins were well maintained and staff was friendly and polite. They have coloring and games options for kids too.

Could be improved
2 things that we didnt like, 1: the ants in the cabin, we had to go get surface spray after finding heaps of ants on the kitchen bench and 2: even know the cabins have ashtrays outside, the ground outside our cabin was littered with smoke buts, other than that, everything was great and would stay there again
